@jankoekepan @Aerdan @a_breakin_glass @z428 @Shamar guess what, it's not possible to tell some incompetent tech weenie "you think you and your paid coding hobby are hot shit but you're a literal menace to the public and you shouldn't be allowed to work on anything that affects the population at large" in a NICE wayyou can call that "dictatorial" if you like. it really isn't, not unless you believe that ALL exercise of authority is dictatorialmore likely I think it just hurts your feelings

tl;dr of this lengthy monologue from @mona about our #chemistry project idea involving bespoke nanoparticles for chemical analysis: https://cybre.space/@mona/101492188895886856basically we're seriously thinking of tabling the nanoparticle idea altogether and instead switching to work with conducting polymer films designed as selective _electrochemical_ sensors. also we just generally want to start gaining experience with conducting polymers in general because they're damn useful.

after Loki punished me yesterday for blithely saying "welp pretty sure that was the worst night I'll ever have" about my multiple abuse triggers a few days ago(gawd do not EVER say "it'll never get worse" around Loki...he'll find a way...and when you have the sort of imagination I have, "worse" can be very "worse" indeed) I am feeling extremely tiredit feels like one of those mornings when I have to reassure myself all over again that matter exists

@nautilee I find that guiding myself into locking onto an external, neutral stimulus is best here. the sound of running water, say. there's a sort of process you can train yourself into where your mind is shouting about something else but you can encourage another part of your mind to remind you "but there's also running water" and slowly edge the awareness of the bad stuff to one side and have the water be more importantbleh bad attempt to describe

I have to admit that I consider the faint garlicky smell of an arsenic mineral sample to be pleasant...but, needless to say, one should not smell it too often.

also amusing myself by trying to imagine what an arsenic-based biochemistry might be like. you'll come across a lot of otiose "expert" opinion on how only carbon based chemistry could possibly work, but there are complex chemical systems featuring complex, modular structures in a massive range of alternatives. the polyoxometalate systems seem like a promising area, and those can incorporate arsenic (arsenomolybdates, etc.) I believe complex thioarsenates also exist. life finds a way ;;3

@DC7IA @stevelord I daresay there's always a whiff of privilege in talk like this. I'm reminded of Bill Gates or some other techie robber baron boasting about how their kids don't even have smart phones.it's the well off and the able who are best able to enjoy the "simple life", and boast about it to others

@DC7IA @stevelord like I find myself genuinely wondering how many times fiddling with my smart phone has saved me from completely dissociating casting smart phone use as "addiction" isn't just smug, it's hideously irresponsible. wanna say that to the face of someone with a true substance abuse problem?

ActivityPub kinda blows, from what I've picked up, but at least it has other clients than Mastodon. what other options are there to stay on the "fediverse"? (I regard Pleroma as a non-starter; I have no intention of supporting the work of Nazi sympathizers.)

@ciaby see, that's just the the sort of memetic insistence in back of Pleroma that makes me deeply suspicious of itthere's no acknowledgment of the association here, no humility. just "see for yourself". and that is, in itself, worrisome.I feel that I am safe in discarding Pleroma as intrinsically unsound, if I'm honest.

@bigl0af @sandrockcstm @caspar that would explain the presence of a U2 album among Apple's dubious achievements I assume that the pressures that big-ticket investors in a tech company have ways of applying _massive_ pressure. these are the men who really and truly run our corporations, after all. it's not engineers, or even the glamorous CEOs, who wield the power. it's men you've never heard of, with huge portfolios, working for unrelated money-extraction industries.
