@nina - Surprisingly indeed, I never knew you wanted to be rolled in designer sheets, you never get enough.

Marx envisioned a grand pattern, power had shifted from upper class to the middle class (vaguely-defined) in the transition from monarchy to capitalism, so he envisioned a second shift to the working class in the transition to the Marxist version of socialism. In this version, rule by the working class would reform everyone and everything, the state would wither away, and an anarchic, coöperative communism would emerge. The Bolshevik Revolution went straight from monarchy to what it called socialism, and in Lenin's eyes they skipped that crucial step. So he imposed "state capitalism," and Stalin doubled down on it. Mao also won power from a monarchy, so China also went for "state capitalism."For the dogmatic Marxist, all totalitarianism is due to the capitalism part (not the state part), and real working-class socialism hasn't yet been tried.

✒ R.I.P. Al Jaffee, whose "MAD Inventions" comics were very influential to me as a budding recycler/reuser and dumpster-diver. Thanks to Nina, I had the great honor of meeting him and letting him know how he had warped my mind.I highly recommend the biography, "Al Jaffee's Mad Life," by Mary-Lou Weisman and illustrated by Jaffee. He was born in Georgia, U.S., but grew up partially in a Lithuanian shtetl, to which he credited his make-do inventiveness.https://www.theguardian.com/books/2023/apr/11/al-jaffee-legendary-mad-magazine-cartoonist-dies-aged-102

They are a scourge. We recently had a huge 4/20 event here in the Haight Ashbury. The stoned drivers and the robotaxis drove each other nuts, and the rest of us as well.

I do live off my wits, but I wouldn't say no to a sinecure or tenure at some point. Always wanted to sit in an ivy-covered office while wearing a tweed jacket with non-leather elbow patches.
