“The vital question here is not why did Justice Alito agree to take the trip, because the trip sounds quite awesome. The question is why did Leo pick him to go, empty seat on the private jet notwithstanding, and why was building a friendship with someone who was in the literal business of reshaping the court to favor his own business so urgently necessary?” https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2023/06/justice-alito-fishing-trip-real-prize.html?fbclid=IwAR0R2WdMt2mKHgKXoOxhFTJwfQ8qbnkWfjNBkd64mc9v3dpSADDZh70I4lc

"Look, I’m 52 years old. I used to be way more interested in how things worked. Now I’m interested in how they fail. I don’t care how good the administration of Bluesky or Threads is today— I care about what happens if it sours tomorrow." (via @pluralistic) https://medium.com/p/20074e311f1f

Google's Chrome browser is now a thin candy shell of browser interface around a full-time surveillance engine and personal data monetization machine. Find a better browser, folks. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/09/googles-widely-opposed-ad-platform-the-privacy-sandbox-launches-in-chrome/

Also, this is not an example of the tech marketplace "working" through consumer selection. Asking folks to independently assess the privacy implications of the technologies they use is only efficient from the tech companies' perspective.

Unfortunately, constant (yet justified) warnings about privacy harms can lead some people to throw up their hands and go full privacy nihilist, which is what tech CEOs like McNealy, Schmidt, and Zuckerberg were all wishcasting when they claimed that "privacy is dead."

Privacy implications are largely opaque to most people, which is why we need non-preemptive, comprehensive privacy legislation/regulation that allows for private rights of action.

There are two clear messages here:1. A second Trump administration would be full-on fascist, and their team is not shy about saying as much.2. There's a not insignificant number of Americans who support this fascism outright, and even more who merely shrug at it.https://www.nytimes.com/2023/11/11/us/politics/trump-2025-immigration-agenda.html?unlocked_article_code=1.9kw.WUb1.7vQevnssDT1R&smid=url-share

@SteveBellovin I'm reminded of a time in the mid-90s, when I was just out of the USMC and returning to school. I was hanging out in Jeff Schiller's lab at MIT where he described RSA (recall the sqeamish ossifrage?) and this new thing called PGP, and I was hooked.

And when politicians don’t jump, when they don’t treat the very wealthy with the deference and admiration they consider their due, some of them become enraged."https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/10/opinion/trump-biden-billionaires-taxes.html
