@grumpygamer I've been mulling over the cross-server issues (I assume you mean the having to copy and paste or go through a login form) and I'm not sure they *can* be solved, technologically. The best idea I've been able to come up with is a browser add-on. People have been publishing some for that purpose lately, but that seems like more of a power user solution.

@grammargirl Fascinating, thank you! ๐I've been taught that "um" and "uh" should be avoided during presentations because they signal a lack of confidence. It feels true that in situations where imposed "speaker" and "audience" roles already suppress conversational turn-taking, there'd be less need for the function you mention. But I still bristle against the framing of a presentation as a "battle of wills" against the audience we must strive to "win." Need to think on this more.

@simon Lotta good and broadly agreeable thoughts! But I feel you understate how often tech companies have gotten away with lying โ or more precisely, with violating prior guarantees. My go-to example is how, when Facebook introduced SMS-based 2FA, privacy experts worried that the possibility of the numbers being used for ad targeting would discourage people from securing their accounts.(1/2)

@vanilla My example goes back a bit further than yours, but I still marvel from time to time how easy it is now to host videos. In the olden days you had to futz with dedicated streaming servers and RTMP and whatnot if you wanted to show people a video clip that was too big to be a GIF, not to mention the codec mess. No wonder YouTube had little in the way of upstart competition. These days I can simply Put The Video On The Webpage like any other file. It's downright blissful.@matthiasott

I finished another #webdev side project and built the QR code generator of my dreams: :fietkau_software: https://fietkau.software/qr* It's instant, purely client-side, and has no ads or upsells.* It has a variety of color, shape, and logo embedding options.* There's PNG and SVG export. The included logo selection is, let's say, "opinionated" and features lots of familiar faces if you enjoy federated social platforms. ๐Here are a few example QR codes that all lead back to my Mastodon profile.

I am publishing a small #ActivityPub / #fediverse project: https://fietkau.software/webfinger_canary and @canary ๐It is a tiny bot showcasing a split-domain WebFinger setup, where the handle domain is different from the ActivityPub server domain. This is supported by Mastodon and some other ActivityPub implementations, but not all of them.So this project, aimed at devs and power users, is part test case, part feature recommendation/advocacy. The bot's website at https://correct.webfinger-canary.fietkau.software/ has all the details.

I'm finally unveiling the #ActivityPub project that has been consuming my weekends: Encyclia, an #ORCID bridge that will make ORCID records followable and interactable on the fediverse. ๐It's early-stage and the ORCID following function is not publicly available yet. We're seeking community feedback on functionality and safety aspects. Read more at https://encyclia.pub or follow @encyclia for news!#fediverse #fedidev #scicomm #wisskomm #academicchatter

I have written down my privacy-first design process for @encyclia and how it relates to Fediverse standards and social norms, and turned the result into a poster presentation for the upcoming ECSCW 2025 conference. ๐https://fietkau.science/orcid_fediverse_public_informationThe poster itself is attached, but also available as a (hopefully accessible) PDF on my website. It's accompanied by a written article too because academics like documentation. ๐Catch me in Newcastle if you're nearby in two weeks! https://ecscw.eusset.eu/2025/

@jupiter_rowland Hey Jupiter, I usually appreciate your advocacy for the non-Mastodon Fediverse, but let's stick to the truth.1. The spec was developed openly, with input from the ActivityPub community: https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/pre-fep-quote-posts-quote-policies-and-quote-controls/50312. Its schema was invented by GoToSocial: https://docs.gotosocial.org/en/stable/federation/interaction_policy/3. It is compatible with quotes from Misskey, Pixelfed, etc. that do not require permission (mainly self-quotes).4. There are already three other implementations in GoToSocial, Smithereen, and dotmakeup.

@encyclia I'll tag my own Encyclia account to see how this goes: @0000-0001-7264-8496 Bracing for some kind of technical collapse. ๐ฌ But also curious what people will say!
