       2. In 2020, along with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a dramatic spike in murders in the United States. This increase in lethal violence, understandably, was covered extensively in national and local media outlets.

       3. Yet, much of this coverage lacked critical context. While the increase in murders was significant, the overall murder rate remained far below its peak in the 1980s and 90s.

       4. But now Jeff Asher (@Crimealytics@twitter.com) has published data revealing the plunge in the murder rate in dozens of citiesAsher calls this drop "astonishing"But other than a piece Asher wrote for The Atlantic, the data has not merited any dedicated coverage in major outlets

       5. The quantity and tenor of crime coverage matters. It shapes public sentiment about crime and ultimately shapes important decisions around public safety budgets, police tactics, and criminal justice policy. https://popular.info/p/us-murder-rate-declines-dramatically

       6. In many large cities, the decline in the murder rate is even more pronounced. Year-to-date murders have declined 40% in Minneapolis, 28% in Atlanta, 26% in Los Angeles, and 18% in Baltimore. But local coverage of these declines has been sparse or non-existent.

       7. The Baltimore Sun, for example, features regular coverage of murders in Baltimore City, which is appropriate. But the Sun has not mentioned that the murder rate has declined 18% year-over-year through June 10. https://popular.info/p/us-murder-rate-declines-dramatically

       1. The Supreme Court decision in Moore v. Harper yesterday, rejecting the independent state legislature theory, was very good news. But it wasn't ALL good news. Roberts' majority opinion includes a caveat Follow along if interested.🧵

       2. Writing for six Justices, Roberts rejected the independent state legislature theory, which the Supreme Court has rejected for 100 years."The Elections Clause does not insulate state legislatures from the ordinary exercise of state judicial review."https://popular.info/p/democracy-dodges-a-bullet

       3. Roberts ruling, however, comes with a potentially significant caveat. He says while state courts can review actions of the legislature on election issues, federal courts can overrule state courts if they "transgress the ordinary bounds of judicial review"

       4. WTF does that mean? Well, Roberts is essentially establishing a concurrence in Bush v. Gore as precedentIn that case, 3 justices wrote that the Florida Supreme Court's order to recount certain ballots exceeded "ordinary statutory interpretation" and was invalid.

       5. All of this is very poorly defined and the standards for "ordinary" judicial review and statutory interpretation are unclear. But Roberts decision opens the door for the Supreme Court to intervene in controversial election issues whenever it wants. Which is not great.

       6. It's unlikely that the three liberal justices who signed onto Roberts' majority opinion wished to endorse a controversial aspect of Bush v. Gore. But it was the price for avoiding a more extreme outcome.https://popular.info/p/democracy-dodges-a-bullet

To recap: Supreme Court justices nominated by a president who lost the popular vote and confirmed by Senators representing far less than half the country have eliminated abortion rights, green-lighted anti-LGBTQ discrimination, and ended affirmative action. In one year.

IMO, we should probably focus less on who gets into Harvard, which is not that important, and more on supporting the educational institutions where most racial minorities and children of working families enroll
