@tinfoilhat Can't see a reason why you can't run them all from home. 10Mb upload is perfectly fine for a very low number of users, unless your nextcloud is used heavily.I could give more advice if you can tell me how many people would use it, what they'd be use for, and why you'd want to move from a VPS to a home server.

@tinfoilhat Oh that's a Mebibit. The unit of measurement invented purely to confuse me.That's substantially worse than I thought. Loading multiple images at once won't be a be a great user experience.Maybe you could get away with the twitter clones, but I wouldn't recommend much else. I would only want to host a basic web server for plain HTML pages myself on that upload speed. If at all possible, maybe stick with the VPS.

@tinfoilhat Oh my mistake. Memory like a goldfish. I forgot I asked the question. In that case, that's a quite awful upload speed for a VPS. Are you paying for it?10Mbit for your home is fine and I'll revert you to my original answer.

@tinfoilhat Yes, slurm is a nice overview of all traffic, and nethogs can tell you traffic on a per application basis.

Popularising Linux for desktop will be a bit part to getting it more usable. That's why I'm very excited Linus is doing a user oriented series about using it for a month.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0506yDSgU7M

There really is too many Linux Distros. Partly due to the success of the open nature of it all, but also perhaps because of a dissatisfaction with current options.

Happy to see some conversations around Twitter alternatives, but like many times before, nothing will come of it. Last instance was the WhatsApp policy changes which spurred conversations to switch to alternatives Signal, but the shift never really happened.Maybe I'm just a bitter old man, angry at the kids not doing what I want them to do.

I recommend browsing the #introduction hashtag. Many new users are joining Mastodon with a non-tech background. I've seen scholars, writers, designers, to name a few. This is great news!

PSA: @fosstodon is a fantastic Mastodon server. The site is reliable and responsive. Their Code of Conduct is solid. They're well funded. Their excess funds are donated to other fantastic projects. It's a good server with good morals. For all of these reasons, I recommend considering supporting them.More info at https://hub.fosstodon.org/

Mastodon and Fosstodon is feeling very wholesome right now! It's a very different vibe. Much more fulfilling. It doesn't feel like a waste of time.#FF@kev - Fosstodon Admin. Just posted a post mortem of the peak in traffic they had.@mike - Fosstodon Admin. Between his beard and his dad jokes, you can't go wrong.@cooper - Fosstodon Community Manager. Best looking Mastodon profile I've seen so far.Everyone else at Fosstodon deserves a follow I'm sure. Good job to them all 👍

@Sheril I have a slight anxiety that the difference is actually the people, not the platform.

The @EDPS have been doing a cracking job lately. For official EU bodies, they've had a Mastodon instance since Feb 2022, and they've just launched a Peertube instance.A great idea that the UK should take up as well.
