Read a story today (not going to link to it) that was just...bad? Like, the writing was bad; the reporting was bad; the conceit was bad. It was a mean article for the sake of being mean. Like, the subject, a fantasy author who apparently writes a ton/has lots of fans/makes lots of money, didn't deserve the knives out. Just a weird story to run.

Taking the kids into the office today but I think the best part for them is riding the train.

Elon labels NPR as state-affiliated media (less than 1% of its revenue comes from tax payers). Elon does not label VOA as state-affiliated media (VOA, with an annual budget of about $250 million, is overseen by the US government).

"You know, like China Cyberspace, the magazine run by the chief internet censorship agency in China, which Musk penned a column for. Because Musk seems to have no problem with actual state-affiliated media that works in his personal interests, but can’t seem to stand independent media that might occasionally call out his bullshit."@mmasnick is, as usual, correct.https://www.techdirt.com/2023/04/05/npr-was-twitters-example-of-what-should-not-be-labeled-state-affiliated-media-then-musk-added-the-label-and-retconned-the-policy/

@dave @tchambers even truer today than 7 years ago when this report first came out. Twitter (and social writ large) drives minimal traffic. We see it every day.

The Conservative push to ban books continues -- this one hits very close to home, as a high school bans a graphic novel based on the diary of Anne Frank, who died in Holocaust. Maybe instead of banning books, like the Nazis did, American conservatives can pick up a book and read?https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/graphic-novel-based-anne-franks-diary-removed-florida-high-school-rcna79053?cid=sm_npd_nn_tw_ma

I love working from home because I get to spend more time with my family (no longer having to do the 3 hour round trip commute). But I also love that I can go pick up my kids from school in the middle afternoon and then walk home. Both my parents worked when I was a kid and I was an after care and then a latchkey kid. Spending more time with the kids, even as I work, now that’s what I call family values. I don’t think I could work, ever again, for a company that forced me into an office.

Fox statement on the settlement:“We are pleased to have reached a settlement of our dispute with Dominion Voting Systems. We acknowledge the court’s rulings finding certain claims about Dominion to be false. This settlement reflects Fox’s continued commitment to the highest journalistic standards. We are hopeful that our decision to resolve this dispute with Dominion amicably, instead of the acrimony of a divisive trial, allows the country to move forward from these issues.”What a joke.

The settlement: a $787.5 million payment from Fox, according to Dominion's lawyers. That's the cost of lying to America. Fox made $4.61 BILLION last quarter.

When BuzzFeed News was firing on all cylinders, it was fantastic. Their journalism was outstanding, and it's a shame the company never figured out how to properly run it.

So brands now have to pay Twitter for the privilege of buying ads? This seems like it’s … not gonna work. “Required verification for advertisers” sounds like a weird extortion.
