"Smith" as a title apparently means "works with metal" but imagine if it meant "craftsperson", then instead of just blacksmith and locksmith we could have other cool occupations:Baker: breadsmithBarista: coffeesmithProgrammer: codesmithBuilder: housesmithIndustrial designer: appliancesmithCivil engineer: bridgesmith

Recently I've been thinking a lot about startup culture, and its values. I don't want to be associated with it at all any more — I want to be the founder of an indie software business, not a startup. I care more about users than million-dollar valuations. And I want more people to feel the same way, choosing small-scale, human values over investment and growth. I tried to articulate this and wrote a thing about it: http://joshsharp.com.au/blog/fewer-startups-more-indies.html

Can anyone give me a summary of why the social co-op instance imploded? All I saw was people saying "well, sucks that it didn't work out" and I dunno much about co-ops but I'm curious, so I want to understand what the problems were

@ifixcoinops still not really sure. Doug's post here sheds a little extra light though: http://discours.es/2018/social-coop/

Hey fediverse, I need to find more music to buy on bandcamp. What's one album you love and would recommend? Let's start a thread. It's hard to pick just one, but I'm gonna go with Haley Heynderickx's I Need To Start a Garden: https://tunes.mamabirdrecordingco.com/album/i-need-to-start-a-garden

@mike true, I guess you're right. That'd be worse. Still, it's the sort of thing I dread happening. I hope the timing given the A&A bill is just a coincidence.

@mike my timeline seems to be pretty dead at this time whenever I'm here which is what prompted me to mention it. Anecdata suggests it is a bad time to toot. Or maybe I'm just not saying anything interesting 😁

@mike it is definitely the time of year to not get off the couch to look at logs.

@natanji the Samsung S9 qualifies if you get the non-US chipset variant. However such a big part of "good camera" these days seems to be software. I gave lineage a try (couldn't get google camera to work) and the photos were much worse without the Samsung camera software, unfortunately.

If you have a Kindle and you feel a bit bad about giving Amazon your money, maybe you'd like my review of switching to a Kobo e-reader (TL;DR: it's good, you should come): http://joshsharp.com.au/blog/kindle-to-kobo.htmlConvincing you that you should feel bad is outside the scope of the post, though.

@wizzwizz4 oh! maybe that's the reason they built it that way then. I'm glad it was useful to be so specific :)

I totally get why we need to keep the lockdown for another few months and generally I have soldiered on but today I am tired and it all feels like A Lot and it's really getting me down.
