@piggo @requiem The old open ones often allow you to monkey with the cams, too. You can reclock them, file them to adjust make-before-break time, etc.

@zwol Now I suddenly feel foolish because I've probably been missing something for years: is there a way to implement semaphores ("sleep until X happens") without condition variables?

@hex @TransGal4872 Amen! ngl, my favorite processors at work are little Cortex-M0 ARMs that have 4 or 8 kB of code space and a mighty 4 kB of RAM. That much RAM feels so luxurious! I can maybe use FIR filters instead of single-pole IIRs! Etc.But best to plan for only using a tiny bit of it where possible. :D

A harmless lazy "let's go ride along Craig Creek" turned into going up Miller Cover, a.k.a. Killer Cove. I love my #bike friends. 😄How do you pack a cat 2 climb into 3.7 mi / 5.0 km? Darn-near continuous climbing, long pitches of 10+% topping out at 15% or so, and throw in some gravel for good measure.

@shippychaos Obligatory link to @noelle 's charming “Why isn’t the new year on the winter solstice?”, which started here on the fediverse, in which they cover this among other things. https://gist.github.com/joyeusenoelle/3754e00a37fe81aa43aad3eb9543f3ce"you'll know that July and August are named after Julius and Augustus Caesar, and think, "oh, they added those two months and bumped the rest of the months back."Nope. The Romans were way, way worse at calendars than that. [...]"

It's new bike today! NEW BIKE DAYYYYYYY.Aaaaand the bike showed up with a bent derailleur hanger (no replacements in stock locally) and the wrong rear wheel. Sigh.I can't be upset; it isn't important in the big picture. But there's this VERY PRETTY PURPLE-BLOO BIKE that I can't ride and that's worth sighing over once.(It is extremely pretty, though.)

Home machining to the rescue! We've a #bike brake rotor lockring that's too thin for my old 16-notch BBT-19 (built for an era when it just had to worry about bottom brackets, not super-thin lockrings) and has too much axle protruding for my BBT-69.3 (socket isn't deep enough). There's a ton of meat in the BBT-69.3, so I just fixtured it and milled out the innards. 1. I should've done this on the SB-9 but it's currently offline; 2. I don't have a 20 mm end mill so had to make a circle by hand.

Checking on the previous homeowner's wiring job before plopping all the Ethernet gubbins down nearby... oh. Yeah, that's why I check. There are at least two things wrong with this wiring job. Sigh.

Don't usually post work stuff here, but we've a summer intern #job opening: power electronics graduate engineer in Jessup, Maryland, USA (north of D.C.). In-office 3 d/wk, WFH 2 d/wk. Want to make some money over the summer working in off-grid solar for a nice stable company that treats people well and does interesting high-perf high-reliability power electronics work? https://apply.workable.com/morningstarcorp/j/C12CFC12B8/(I don't get any bonus or anything from this. It's just a sweet place to work.)#fedihire #fedijobs

It's not much of a #bicycling picture, but the roads around here are just really #$!% lovely (if a bit vertical).

Some photos from last week's #cycling trip through the mountains of Slovenia et al. Gorgeous, incredibly nice people, steep climbs, and SO HOT at the start of the week.

From today's #bike ride: one of the regular runs by the New River but with a big extended loop over Guinea Mountain, Broad Hollow, etc. A bucket of climbing but great company and perfect weather! I'm *tired*.

@cr1901 Are you asking if the IP *fragments* will arrive in increasing numerical order for reassembly? In my experience, typically yes but not always esp during poor/long network performance.

@cr1901 I'm unaware of any network stack (that supports IP fragments) which wouldn't reassemble them in the correct order before handing them along as a UDP packet. Such a thing is, I suppose, possible, but would be a blatant design failure re how IP fragment numbering is specified to work.

@davidrevoy You're doing good work. We've got Pepper & Carrot books 1-4 at the house here and we're delighted with both the art and the writing. The dragon art in that scene got a cheer from the household, too!

While there are still a lot of Blue Ridge Parkway closures from hurricane Helene, I was surprised that the recent ice and wind storm closed a previously-repaired 3.1 mile section over the top of Rocky Knob. There were a few downed trees intruding into the road on even the ungated side.Still absolutely beautiful out there today on the #bike, though!
