@futurebird I loved this book when I read it a couple of years ago. Very bleak and perplexing, but also somehow uplifting. I have “Orlanda” by the same author waiting for me to find the right headspace to read

@futurebird I think Trump is basically a meme-stock: people who buy into him aren't thinking rationally. He exists outside of normality. Even if you might otherwise abhor rape, he's not a real person and his actions are somehow also not real and do not have real consequences. This is politics as reality TV

This dial is infuriating! What are these non-standard cooking temperatures like 170? And where is the dot in the middle? 155? What the fuck is that?

Behold! Through an insanely long and drawn-out process – involving two kinds of willow, fabric dye and a Python script – I have succeeded in creating a ball#OutputArts #InTheStudio

This thing is made from 42 different pieces of willow with build instructions generated by a Jupyter notebookTruly, I am working at the intersection of art and technology!Or just over-complicating a very simple task…

There is a ton of careful process in this build, but when it just comes together into the right shape it is incredibly satisfying!

Shape 6 may be my favourite – there is something so elegant about it. Not sure what to call it… a slender lemon?#OutputArts #InTheStudio #InstallationArt

I was fully expecting shape 7, aka "the bell", to be a real problem – it has the hardest bend in it – but it has come together first go!I may make another cup of tea to celebrate#OutputArts #InTheStudio #InstallationArt

After a mass of measuring, cutting, pulling, soldering and sealing, we have 77 outdoor-rated "neon" pixel tape runs ready to be wrapped around the willow shapesProps to Jay, who made all of the cables, came into the studio to do the pulling with me, and then soldered up all of the ends before I sealed them#OutputArts #InTheStudio #InstallationArt

Wrapping these is kind of a process of feeling where the tube wants to go, which doesn't always seem to be where I think it should go…

My new year's resolution is to continue ignoring all technologies that I am told ignoring will result in me being left behind. I embrace the being left behind. I will become a forest witch, speaking to myself in invented programming languages. In the dark I will twist little bits of wire together to make flickering lights that amuse squirrels. I will let the 8-bit soil from which I came reclaim my body.

I do not want global reach. I do not want to hyperscale. I wish to be so, so small. I will wiggle into the cracks between the enterprise servers and make a nest. In the muffled quiet I will read Forth poems about a time before memory was vast and filled with angry noise.

(My other new year’s resolution is to befriend the crows – though this may just be an extension of the forest witch thing)

@futurebird I got an (already then old) HP engineering calculator when I was an undergrad 35 years ago and have been using RPN since to the point where I am now largely unable to use a normal infix calculator…On an RPN calculator one would normally type "10 ENTER 10 + 10 +" or 10 ENTER 10 ENTER 10 + +". As I recall, the HPs have a quirk where ENTER doubles as a DUP, so you can type "10 ENTER ENTER ENTER + +".

@futurebird Years ago I got offered "show your Python skills" quiz on LinkedIn and the answer to this question was given as "integer division". I was so furious I put in a complaint. It is, of course, "floor division". And Python-style modulus is the One True '%' operator –C's remainder can get in the bin.
