@historyofpunkrock The first album I ever owned was on cassette: The Boomtown Rats' 'Tonic For The Troops'.You've also reminded me that, on this day in 1980, it was the first of the three times that I saw The Clash live.

@historyofpunkrock Another early cassette I own. My uncle Dave bought me this for Xmas (1979?). He's the coolest uncle you could ever have. He's not much older than me, and is a huge Hawkwind fan. He bought loads of early punk/new wave stuff: particularly Radio Stars, and the early Stiff releases. I remember the first time I heard Magazine's 'Shot By Both Sides' and Patti Smith's 'Hey Joe/P*ss Factory ' were his copies. This cassette got me into Wire, who I absolutely love.

@historyofpunkrock Here's another anecdote for you: Some years ago, I put TV Smith on in Leicester. He stayed at my house, and I drove him to the train station in the morning. We passed De Montfort Hall. He looked out the window and remembered playing there with the Adverts in 1977/8. On the way back I remembered this cassette, and thought: What would me, at 12 years of age, had thought, had I known, that decades later, I would have spent such time with one of The Adverts? He's a lovely guy, btw

@historyofpunkrock Never saw The Slits, but lucky enough to have seen Ari in 2007.

@historyofpunkrock I love Hüsker Dü. Was lucky enough to see them twice in the UK: once in a 300 capacity pub in Leicester, and for this tour: Glastonbury Festival. Other highlights from the festival were Trouble Funk, Misty In Roots, and Julian Cope. I remember Elvis Costello dragging on a bit. I vaguely remember the first two New Order songs, before having to sit down, watching the back of someone's knees for a while, then crawling back to my tent. It was that kind of festival.

@historyofpunkrock Third gig I ever went to was SLF at Leicester University in 1980. £1.80 for an advance ticket. Nobody's Heroes tour. I wish I still had the badges and poster I bought on the night. Another Pretty Face were supporting. I think they went on to become The Waterboys.

@historyofpunkrock My programme from 1981 gig, at Leicester University. The ticks and marks are to denote the records I owned then, and still own, and the songs they played that night. The Wall were the support band, who were also excellent. I remember the singer having the anti war patch that you got with early copies of Crass's 'Nagasaki Nightmare' on his jacket. So, I immediately liked that. My first time being down the front at a gig, and I passed out at the end. I was only 13!

@historyofpunkrock Seen The Fall more than any other band. And own more Fall records than any other band. Here's some of my memorabilia from gigs I went to.

@historyofpunkrock Not seen that clip before. Thanks. My partner, Emma, and I, love Buzzcocks. On the anniversary of his death, we went to visit the mural in honour of Pete Shelley, in his hometown, Leigh, a couple of years ago. I never met him, but Emma did, at a gig in Leicester. She'd been down the front, getting knocked around a lot. After they played, he tracked her down, spoke to her, and gave her his plectrum (or pick for you Americans). 😉

@historyofpunkrock Astonishing music. This is also, if you can track down a copy.

@historyofpunkrock Some photos from the first time I saw The Cramps, in Leicester, UK, 1984. Warning: contains male nudity. Lux's trousers split and he spent half the gig with his genitals exposed. Didn't stop him crowd surfing, though. The chicken dancing down the front was brutal. I woke up the next day with bruises everywhere.https://www.flickr.com/photos/tomoldfield_art/6329545871/in/photostream/

@historyofpunkrock One of my all time favourite albums. Saw them play the whole of it in 2010 at the Hammersmith Apollo, London. Suicide were supporting. What a gig!

@historyofpunkrock The Smiths played my hometown, Leicester, UK, four times. The first time touring Hand In Glove, and last time was touring Meat Is Murder. I was lucky enough to see the other two gigs: circa What Difference Does It Make?, at a sold out Leicester University, 16 February 1984, where I was down the front and got covered in gladioli, and, a swift return, a month later, at De Montfort Hall. It's such a shame the political path Morrissey has taken nowadays.https://youtu.be/53Ayy9yzpRQ?si=w73pkTcxzzZezwen

@historyofpunkrock To bring it back to The Smiths' punk roots: Drummer, Mike Joyce, was previously in a Manchester punk band called The Hoax. When we were doing our PhDs, and teaching at De Montfort University, in Leicester, UK, I used to share an office with the bass player from them, Steve Mardy aka Sox, who became a good friend of mine.https://youtu.be/8iK52omRSqI?si=6j5vRUFvs1TMtTl6
