@futurebird @TucsonSentinel They don't have to apologize any more, like they did a decade or two ago.https://www.politico.com/story/2011/06/allen-apologizes-for-macaca-moment-056212

@futurebird I had a great HS chemistry teacher, but the most memorable moment was her story, during the lesson on ideal gasses, that she met an old student who remembered nothing except "PV=nRT", and her prediction was that we would all remember that, and indeed that is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of her class.

@futurebird "The weirdest thing in the universe is on Earth" (1) might be like "All ravens are black" in that statistical arguments get paradoxical."Hey look at this huge list of things we have observed outside of Earth that are not quite as weird as the weirdest thing you've seen on Earth." Is that evidence for (1)?Or does the knowledge that this list of things is proportionally vanishing (not to mention dimmed by distance) serve as evidence against (1)?Dunno.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raven_paradox

@futurebird Watching a jumping spider for the first time, I was reminded of a tiny ninja, crawling up a wall, halting and rotating to face a sound, waiting for a bit, and proceeding when all was clear.I didn't even know how cute jumping spiders are in close-up, just that they seemed like extremely competent little fighters on a very important and very tiny mission.

@futurebird @dansinker The dissonance of reading, say, the NY Times while living in a city center out in the provinces (South of Market, San Francisco) fosters skepticism of national media reporting on things outside their expertise. They don't seem to talk to enough local sources to get more than rumor, spin, and reflections of the biases of others.Local news sources are so valuable. Mission Local (@MLNow) is excellent.

@futurebird @sewblue @catmisgivings For the I-80 slice of NY / NJ, the John McPhee 'Former World' series of books have some explanations of road cuts. I was just re-reading Basin and Range, which is mostly about Nevada, but starts out on a road cut in the Palisades.
