Property destruction isn’t usually violence. It *CAN* be. If you paint hate symbols clearly associated with violence towards an entire group on a place of religious worship, you’re sending a violent threat to the people who worship there. That threat of violence is significant.A broken window in a door at a university? That’s not “violence”. It’s not meant to be read as “I’m going to hurt you.” That’s the difference. And also why violence (police) is not the appropriate response.

@tomjennings In college, I learned the architecture of the PDP-8 and have loved it since, writing several emulators and even a hardware implementation in FPGA. The machine language is beautiful in the simplicity.

Why is it that the same people that think AI will somehow be a replacement for people thinking are the same people who think science proves you can't change gender...

If you supported the "right" to take horse pills for COVID, don't you dare tell me that trans medicine is unsupported by science.

Here’s what parenting can look like. When I told my dad I was trans, my dad’s response was, “Oh! I can send you jewelry now!” (He was retired and made jewelry as a hobby). Two days latter, I had a letter in the mail addressed to Joelle, the first time “Joelle” ever got mail, with a necklace in it. Later he made me this one. He told me, “I hope I got the colors right, I looked it up online.”You don’t have to mourn a child transitioning. You can be the first to do so many affirming things.

Testosterone doesn't make men aggressive. Really. If a man is behaving badly, it ain't testosterone, it's something else. The association between T and aggression is weaker (MUCH weaker) than other factors associated with aggression. And, yes, this is a feminist issue -- because to imply that bodies with higher T have higher anti-social behavior is literally the definition of biological essentialism. It also implies men can't help it, which is also false.

Also almost all the trans men I know report that they became *LESS* aggressive on T. And frankly I think we should listen to them when they talk about the experience of being men.

Reminder: puberty blockers are the compromise position. The right thing to do for kids who are clearly trans is to start them on HRT at puberty. But people panic that kids old enough to be required to carry a fetus to term in most states might make a mistake no matter how sure they seem. So instead we compromise and give these kids reversable puberry blockers until the adults can deal with their transphobia.

Seriously, open source people, name one of your variables "transgender_marxism" and name one of your functions "green_new_deal".You don't want your software used in weapons? This will help ensure it isn't.

US Techbro "growth ideas" for the last decade: * Cheaper (for now) unregulated services that replace regulated (for good reason) services, then when they put the regulated ones out of business charge more. * Mansplaining as a service. Automated bullshit engines, code/bug generators, etc. * Nobody wants to make an art. Let a computer steal your arts. * Forest-burning money-laundering drug currencies. Sometimes with racist monkeys. * More NazisUS tech is doomed.

Here's a message for parents: If your kid is autistic *TELL THEM*.I get so sad reading stories of people who struggled thinking they were morally broken until they found out they were different, only to discover that others had the word that explained things, but didn't want to share it.Nobody catches autism by being told they are autistic. It doesn't make you more autistic. It just lets you know you are different, not defective.

A project I'm working on is an open-source CART dictionary. CART (human captioners) often like to know the jargon and terminology ahead of time so they can pre-program their machnies and know what to expect.YOU CAN HELP PEOPLE WHO BENEFIT FROM CART!If you know a particular subject area -- technical or non-technical, please consider contributing!I.E. do you know about engine repair? Add a page for those words. About Python? Add a page for that.https://github.com/jmaslak/cart-vocab

The reason Texas is part of the USA is that Mexico made slavery illegal.Remember the Alamo? A lot of white people don't know is that what the "brave" people in the Alamo were fighting for was slavery. That's also why it took two years after the civil war ended for enforcement of anti-slavery in Texas. (it wasn't because of slow communication, as is told in revisionist histories, it was because white people willfully defied the law).Freedom is always worth fighting for.

"AI is great for accessibility!"Also: Google's AI-based autocaptions won't transcribe "fuck".We are not all children. But, as @ireneista points out, even if we are children, accessibility requires the same rights for disabled people as non-disabled people. The lack of cussing, the lack of vocabulary for sex (beyond, if we are very lucky, clinical body part names, menstruation, and reporting abuse) and other "adult" things in our devices is infantilizing.https://adhd.irenes.space/@ireneista/statuses/01K4GZCAQVNQNBEJGX0Z91YZC4

@ireneista IMHO, text to speech or speech to text used by disabled people should have "no" and "fuck" in the most minimal vocabulary option. What do you do if a kid hits "fuck" over and over and over again and laughs? Probably the same thing you'd do to a non-disabled kid who says fuck over and over again. The next most important thing on devices is privacy. Too many devices have logging modes that log communication without user consent. Disabled people (inc. kids) should have some privacy.

@ireneista Ideally, a device will support a kid saying <description of sex assault>. Or "I am gay" without a potential abuser or unsafe person knowing. This is really important. The kid should also be able to say "fuck" to another kid and laugh at how naughty it is during recess out of teacher earshot.

@ireneista And I mentioned "user consent" for logging. There *ARE* legitimate uses for language logging (an SLP that can help program vocabulary should be interested in what is missing in the language system, but you use). But an *obvious* indication should be visible at all times when recording, have a clear, VERY simple explanation, and have a one click way to turn it off that can't be disabled. It also should not log being turned off.
