@ebassi There are cases where hardware enablement or work with a specific framework is still necessary, for a reason or another before it can run an upstream distro out of the box. And in such cases having a spin, can be necessary to do that work before upstreaming.Linux on mobile for the past 6 years comes to mind. (One Plus 6, Librem 5, pinephone, Volla phone)But I am not sure if that falls into your category of a "spin".@zachdecook @alatiera

@evan they are not judges. They are political activists. And we kinda know that. Why else do we need to know their political opinions at their confirmations sessions. Why else do we refer to the number of conservatives vs dems on that court as if we where talking about MP of political parties in a parliament. The court and how it works should be rebuilt.

<1/3>One of the things that is kinda irritating for me, in the "Linux distro model" debate (traditional packages vs immutable+flatpak) is the characterization that some proponents of the latter model make of how stuff gets packaged to "traditional" distros, phrases like:"The distro grabs all the software they want their users to have access to."As if distros had some central committee that make those decisions in an arbitrary way. And acted as a middleman that wants to keep control.

<2/3>Distros have criteria and characteristics. Some distros may commit to only package Free Software, others might not care. Some might want to be rolling release and others stable. But you know what, none of the distros ever kinda hid those criteria. And distros have the right to make those choices, and users have the right to choose a distro that suits them.

<3/3>But if a package meets the criteria of a distro, them packaging it or not for a distro depends only of a volunteer distro packager wanting to commit volunteer time to package it for that distro. It does not depend on some “Central Commitee making arbitrary choices” (my choice of words).

<extra>Also, it's not like users never had the power to bypass a distro and it's criteria, and install from a third party repo (AUR, PPA, copr, pip, npm, cargo), or install the pre the package manually, or build from source.

@primalmotion yes, I did watched the video. But that video was not the first time I saw/read such characterizations. And sadly it will not be the last.

@TheEvilSkeleton I liked your article. Even tough my position is in favor of opt-in. As contribution there. Is a linux distro that has had opt in telemetry for years now, Debian. You can do it during the install process or join after install. the tool is called popcon; And even tough it is opt in, in the last 12 months it had about 25K submissions. Which is a large sample compared with other attempts to get telemetry. Check the graphic at the end of the page https://popcon.debian.org/

@arstechnica Musk will make his prediction (that twitter will be profitable by the end of the year) by getting rid all all twitter staff minus 10 folks give or take. Not by making advertisers return.:)

Best thing about ChatGPT is that I have not seen any posts or articles about NFT since ChatGPT showed up.

Every time you fail to resist joining a chat service with a different chat protocol, just because it is the chat service/protocol that project $NAME uses, a fairy dies.

just an opinion; for folks trying promote their free software projects. You don't need to trash talk other/previous free software projects that exist(ed) in the same area in order to promote your project.
