It might be useful for you to understand that only for some things is this present moment 'in advance.' Your 1A liberties, for example, have been gone and demonstrably prosecutable for the past 18 months, depending on what side of various issues you're on. (You can literally kill people as part of your political speech on other sides of the same issues that you will be jailed and charged with a felony for holding a sign or a camera at on the left.) This is why some of us, including those who really LIKE liberal democracy and wanted to see it preserved, not collapsed, have been screaming and pointing and trying to get y'all to move collectively. It didn't happen. And this, right now, is the not-yet for some things, but it's frankly the not-anymore for a great many others.I am saying this because you need to wise up.

It's interesting to note, in fact, from this vantage point, that the 1A incursions that were made under the previous administration (during the George Floyd protests in particular, where we saw physical attacks on journalists, and arrests of the press, with a martial impunity not previously documented in this country) were never walked back during the Biden administration. In fact, we lost even more rights ground, not to the administration itself, but to an aggressive and capital-captured right-wing judiciary. You have MANY fewer freedoms and are MUCH closer to the margin of harm for resisting than was the case in 2016 or even 2020. Covid probably obscured the very real losses of the later era- guess what, suckers: the freedom you lost had nothing to do with public health precautions. In fact, aggressively rolling back those precautions and ensuring they will never be deployed again is, counterintuitively, part of further erosion of meaningful liberties- it's an assault on bodies.

In summary, no one gets to ask you to be cannon fodder, and those who were silent during the last 8 years and who have undertaken no meaningful resistance themselves should probably not be the ones to chart your course. Resistance is needed, and you will assuredly do some. But this is not the beginning of a new game. It's end stage Monopoly, but militarized.

It's cute that we thought that the end of Monopoly ever *wouldn't* be militarized

I have learned a tiny bit of Japanese over the past week, thanks to Wani Kani and duolingo, and I feel pretty fierce about it

I am a huge believer in having seasons of low key obsession about particular things, and developing new skills and knowledge bases related to those. Thematic living for the win. It keeps things fresh, keeps you learning, and you'll be amazed at the symmetries and synergy that pop up. Which is to say: IT'S JAPAN YEAR, MOFOS

Thematic living and learning aside, I am also sharing this because IT FEELS AMAZING. In spending a couple of relatively fun hours spread across a week, I learned a few functional pieces of a language I previously knew NOTHING from and had dismissed, even as something of a language learner, as "too hard." Did you know that our brains are plastic, in the sense of continually able to change and expand and make new connections?Did you know that one of the actually good things about this tech era is that tools exist and they are good and so quickly available and some are even free? Like yeah we all love to hate Duolingo but lol guess what it beats the shit out of tapes from the library.Did you know that you can just choose something, anything, and with some effort you can get better at it?Did you know that it's ok to suck at something and ALSO get better at it? Now you know. 😉

I went to mid-tier public schools and they are still absolutely relentless if you thought it was just your posh private alma materIt's truly astonishing commitment to messaging and outreach and I wonder what it would be like if the progressive church tried this

@futurebird My best guess is that this comes down to either what one saw modeled by caregivers in terms of "how we do fair allocation," or what one dearly wishes they had seen modeled. I grew up in a family that definitely would be considered resource scarce by my spouse's family or our current family standards, but nothing like this ever happened nor would it occur to me. In fact, now that I think about it, maybe I should do something like this NOW because actually people eat my stuff all the time in my present household. Maybe it's gendered? I am the sole female living with three man-type humans.

I have felt annoyed and aggrieved by the 'let's be honest: we had no idea how bad this was gonna be- it's SHOCKING' year in review posts. Motherfuckers, this is because you live in willful denial. Many of us told you and we aren't fucking Nostradamus- we knew because we simply **listened to what they said they planned to do** **knew and cared about people and communities who had been horrifically impacted last time** and **maintained a basic awareness of the last 100 years of Western history and noticed the places it rhymed**This is not rocket science and I'm fucking pissed that amnesia and stupidity get to meme 'reality.'I have been holding that in for weeks; whew.

That said, there is another truth here- I *have* been surprised by something, and it's not the audacious overreach of the regime or the brittleness of institutions iteratively weakened.I have been surprised by how **immediately** and **effectively** possible it has been to slow the progress of the shitshow where popular resistance has combined with legal filings. That combo- pushback in the streets plus lawsuits- won again and again and again in the second half of the year, and it has preserved pieces and functions of public life and private peace that I thought were gone for good.

And because of the effectiveness of this pushback, I have hope I did not expect to have. Our family has choices this year that I did not expect would abide. I wonder about possibilities and slower spaciousness where I expected only a tidal wave of iron repression.I am still deeply scared for all of us, and I mean it globally. The need to change is so dire and the urgency to block change so militarized that we are collectively in such a grim spot. But I have learned something here about fast and slow, and what I didn't get and will be learning about this year is the magic part of 'slow.' When we can slow the energy of the repressive wave, the organic (and orchestrated) change waiting in the wings can sometimes happen. I will be watching for this in the coming seasons.
