@dave That’s a pretty shallow shed in back… (I’d make a pitch (🤣) for hip roofs.)

@tomjennings Reminds me of a controller for a CDC Storage Module (remember those?) I designed for Zilog for their Z8000-based Unix system. The Unix driver, including error handling and request chaining, could be printed out on one page, with normal-size print. That was fun.

@tomjennings When I was 18, my father had just replaced his 1961 Classic with a VW bus. He owned some interesting cars until he finally and sadly but sensible settled on a series of Camrys.

@tomjennings Flatbed scanners have been largely supplanted by multipurpose printer/scanner/copiers, seems like.

@tomjennings Steve & I go way back, to the 70s, making disk controllers for minicomputers. One thing led to another, I guess.

@tomjennings Not mine, but rather Steve Gibson’s. We worked together and have stayed in touch. He’s solely responsible for SpinRite. All assembler.

@tomjennings Disk controllers were very close to the metal in those days. TTL SSI & a bit of MSI, discrete PLLs.

@tomjennings conventional in AmE when the last syllable is unstressed. Not so elsewhere.

@tomjennings In the 70s, I helped write and then maintained a full-screen editor with a data-entry mode modeled on an 026 with program cards.The editor’s source itself existed in the form of four boxes of punched cards–I’d estimate 7000+ cards in all. I can’t remember if I ever moved the master source to disk. Raytheon 70x assembler.

@tomjennings I will argue that at the very least professionalism *needn’t* ruin joy. Unless we have different definitions of professionalism, say some version of “no true Scotsman” (if you’re joyful, you’re an amateur) (no, autocorrect, not “armature”).
