@urusan Someone once told me that the true strength of a language is measured like this: “How big of a program can a team of average programmers write before it collapses under its own weight?”By this metric, Java is an incredible language.

@urusan I’ve been wanting a non-apple 5k 27” display for years. Non integer scale factors never look right. (Which is why Apple picked that resolution.)

@urusan kids that drink skim milk are more likely to be obese, too. It’s because the skim isn’t satisfying and so they eat more of things that are worse than the milk fat.

@urusan it’s gotten to the point where I avoid searching on Amazon. I find what I want elsewhere and then price check.

@urusan upgrading to an eco friendly washer brought me the greatest energy savings. The improved spin cycle really cut down on the drying time.

@urusan I had a SATA controller turn to the dark side one time. It would occasionally but rarely corrupt a block before writing. This caused trouble for RAID because there were no read errors reported by the drive and so there was no way of knowing which block was the bad one. Fortunately I was using RAID-Z which writes additional checksums.

@urusan if I understand the concept correctly, c++ operator overloads would fall into this category. Mainly because they can be defined as functions outside of the object. There’s also a language I came across that allows stand alone functions of a correct syntax to be treated like member functions of an object.

@urusan is single user even an option anymore? I thought the only “single user” option was multiuser with only one account.

@urusan if I’m adding the liquid (or ice) to control the temperature I do it last (and adjust the quantity). It if it’s for flavor I put it in first. The hotter the drink the faster it cools to the environment. But adding colder liquids cools based on quantity.

@spolsky I stole this from someone else and it pairs nicely with tagged types: use XfromY() instead of YtoX(). That aligns the types in the name of the function with the types of the parameter and return. varInKm= kmFromCm(varInCm)The two “km” are touching.

@urusan it may be STEM, but if she’s not designing the mechanism of production, it’s not engineering.

@urusan Software engineering is engineering in the same way that organizing an assembly plant is engineering even though you’re not designing any of the individual machines. It’s concerned with processes and flows. DevOps is a tricky one. All the DevOPs I personally do is following other peoples guides to set it up and that is not software engineering. Creating the custom content pipelines that game companies use is software engineering.

@urusan Mere programming is not software engineering either. I work with a number of scientist that write code, but they’re not doing software engineering. Their mathematical models are good, but they struggle with integrating them into a cohesive system. Pure Computer Science isn’t engineering either, but reality forces most CS to do engineering anyway. All this isn’t to belittle any fields of study. It’s just a categorization of the nature of the work.

@urusan I agree, as an engineer I spend a lot of time doing non-engineering technical work. (And a lot of non technical work as well)You don’t have to reinvent the wheel to be doing engineering. Selecting the wheel to achieve desired vehicle performance is engineering. Picking your tires in the shop is not. Design isn’t necessarily engineering either. A civil engineer I know describes his job as, “architects design the building and I make it work”.

@urusan When it comes to the design of fabric, is she designing it for measurable properties like tensile strength or durability? Is she taking an artistic design and modifying it for manufacturability?

@amonakov Itanium (unfortunately) makes sense. There’s a lot of business stuck on the architecture. Xeon Phi was mostly for supercomputers which turn over pretty fast. Business servers are eternal.HP is probably maintaining Itanium support for their customers.

@foone I can’t get on board with this unless it also emulates my childhood Panasonic KX-P1123.It hits the just-right volume level of the whole home hearing it, but no risk of hearing damage.
