A friend of mine, @ajn142, came up with a really interesting term: "parasocial media."Social media is about socializing, but on many if not most "social" media platforms, we're seeing less and less actual socializing, with most engagement being reposting things others posted, without additional comment.That ain't social, it's parasocial.Avoid parasocial media. Go where people actually talk to you.

Google's "Gemini" assistant broke into another conversation of mine to comment on a phrase I used in that conversation, still unsummoned.That makes three times so far this month.At this rate, we're all going to need hardware switches behind the mics on our phones. Trusting ANY of the big corporations NOT to monitor raw audio for anything but activation keywords is clearly a fool's errand.

Why is setting up a new phone such a dystopian fucking nightmare, EVERY DAMN TIME?Should it REALLY take an hour or more of my time to set up a brand new phone with a brand new number and absolutely nothing special about it?My youngest is getting his first phone tonight, and I am very grateful that he is my youngest, which hopefully means I'll NEVER have to do this nonsense again.I'm kidding myself, obviously--he'll need at least one more phone before he leaves the house. Today, I had to dig into a senior executive's email to find out why the hell "Otter dot AI" was suddenly invited to every Teams meeting the company had, and was emailing people snippets from what was said, still images of them from the call, etc.If you sign up for this thing, it starts emailing anybody you've had a meeting with, pretending to be you, giving them a big fat blue button that says "open minutes."If they do: now it attends THEIR meetings, and emails THEIR contacts as THEM.

Google Photos: we made a "color pop" (desaturating *only* the background of a portrait) of one of your photos for you! Look! Me: closes filtered photo suggestion absent-mindedly, then decides I actually want it, goes to Google Photos to apply that filter.Except THE FILTER IS NO LONGER IN THE UI OF THE APP. It's been replaced by Gemini, which tells me that's an "advanced technique" it can't do yet. After twenty minutes of googling (hah!), there is no replacement or workaround.Well then.
