I think of life as a game, and being at the opening of The Torment Nexus was like playing life at Level 10 on Hard Mode. Since I like taking on difficult challenges I found it interesting and rewarding because I was growing and learning so rapidly.Besides, as everyone in both Silicon Valley *and* the Valley of the Damned knows, just shipping is so much more important than what you ship.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t note that in all of this there is also a cautionary tale for anyone who succeeds at something — which is that the higher you climb, the smaller your world becomes. It’s a strange paradox but the richest and most powerful people are also some of the most isolated.

Unfortunately there was no way for me to realize this without experiencing it firsthand and opening the literal gateway to hell since this tale has never been explored in any work of art. If life is able to evolve again on our planet maybe they’ll explore this insight further.

I realize our society today trends toward polarization but when it comes to The Torment Nexus, Tzaunh MAY HIS REIGN BE DARK AND ETERNAL, and the future of life as we know it, I am neither a fan nor a hater — I’m an optimistic pragmatist.

As for me, after taking some time to think about my next move, I’m excited to announce I’ll be joining McKinsey and Company as Junior Associate Partner in their new Torment Nexus division interfacing directly with the Seven Elders and Council of the Damned. I expect it will continue to be a very entertaining ride.

OpenAI replacing the only two women on the board, and the only researchers actually interested in preventing skynet, with the guy who invented the like button and the king of neoliberalism is almost too on the nose.

@clive I had a similar realization this year. Maybe I’m getting soft in my old age? Maybe it’s just there are so many actual problems in the world to be concerned with?

@kellan I feel like @simon is doing the best job of keeping me interested in whats going on with LLMs and has written extensively this year about various bits of tooling. His `llm` CLI has been super useful in my own explorations.

Me, an idiot: “So, kids, by setting the thermostat a little lower and eating less meat, we’re doing our part to make the world more sustainable”VCs, very smart: “We just raised $100 billion dollars from the sovereign wealth funds of three petrostates to build the world’s largest AI supercomputer. It uses as much power and water as Guatemala and the primary use case is for management consultants to autogenerate powerpoints for justifying mass layoffs.”

I am in no way clever enough to make up that bit about petrostates funding AI, it’s an actual thing on this, the worst timelinehttps://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/19/business/saudi-arabia-investment-artificial-intelligence.html

Marc Andreessen: “And another thing! We would’ve solved climate change in the 70s if the pesky environmentalists hadn’t killed nuclear power!”Also Marc Andreessen: “I’m proud to announce we’re working with one of the most brutal, repressive, corrupt regimes in history to help them launder their oil money on a computer that uses ⅛ of the global electric supply to generate ransom notes.”

One consequence of the go-go Obama years and the reactionary Trump aftermath is there’s an entire generation of otherwise smart adults who never had to figure out why things are the way they are. So they end up, a full decade too late, mystified that the electric car rockets guy is a fascist or the sentient bowling balls who funded the app-based lifestyles of the 2010s are trying to reinstitute feudalism.Turns out those liberal arts educations are worth something after all.

My thoughts on Dick Cheney voting for Kamala Harris are that Dick Cheney should be rotting in a cell at The Hague.

My favorite thing I’ve learned this week is America’s most reliable source of road trip diarrhea was founded by an oil exec to get Americans to buy more gasoline.

Having spent three years inside a massive tech company rebuilding itself around AI, @anildash is exactly right here. It’s normal technology that the bosses see as an opportunity to expand and exploit, including their own workers. https://www.anildash.com/2025/10/17/the-majority-ai-view/

@dwineman @anildash @davidgerard I’d separate LLMs (and also blockchain and even NFT) from the way they’re implemented, especially via massive amounts of capital. Maybe a framing of LLM and blockchain are normal tech, “AI” or “crypto” are the political projects.
