If all you know about #opensource is that it has something to do with licensing, then you only know half of the story... In fact, likely less than half. The true success and catalyst of open source are the people and the communities that empower the project. Licenses allow for innovation; but the community and culture *ensures* it.

Yes, Apache OpenOffice is still alive and kicking, and no, it is not intended to be the #opensource office suite for the masses. It still has a very specific use case, and maybe it's not *your* use case, but for those who it is, it's vitally important.Test builds for AOO 4.2.0-Dev4 can be found here: https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/openoffice/4.2.0-Dev4/binaries/

@pbarker Those stuck on extremely old OSs and platforms as well as those that require permissive (non-copyleft) licensing. There are huge swathes of world population that are still using 32 bit OSs for example.

A toast to all those incredibly important #opensource people who unfortunately aren’t privileged enough to be able to afford the trip to #FOSDEM or have a company foot your bill. YOU ARE APPRECIATED!

IMO, companies and huge foundations with deep pockets don’t need any additional voices in the #opensource ecosystem. Those who do need additional voices, and better representation are the individual contributors that comprise the open source community at large.Whoever you vote for in the #OSI elections for individual seats, make sure they are there for the people. For us.

@grobmeier For me, OSI remains one of the last standing entities that believes in some absolute truths about #opensource, even when there are serious and loud voices calling for changes. Open Source hasn’t succeeded despite the OSD, but because of it.And yet OSI must remain relevant and pragmatic. It must remain involved. OSI matters because open source matters.
