Just moved my main account over to jawns.club and there are lots of new people now so figured I'd give a re- #introduction :)I live in #philly, am into #foss (especially when it serves the public good to some degree) and have gotten into #biking for transportation quite a lot over the pandemic (hi #BikeTooter). Doing what little I can to promote user freedom on the internet and #safestreets IRL.#visionzero #urbanism

@Alon I think both positions are lacking some nuance. Life expectancy for example was the highest it had ever been pre-pandemic. (It's dropped in some places since 2020 for obvious reasons.)But also, as you well know, the US has a hard time building transit these days in a way we didn't in the past.I think progress isn't uniform across every field and in some cases we have gone backwards.

@smallcircles @neil One option in case you hadn't seen before it is the FLA: https://fsfe.org/news/2017/news-20171013-01.en.htmlI've not yet read through it in detail, but my understanding is it's basically a CLA that allows relicensing by a project steward with the stipulation that it must remain free software (presumably as defined by FSFE in this case, might be/probably is customizable)

@aeva @technomancy @cwebber In my mind, user freedom (or user empowerment) has to involve also making that freedom more accessible to people who wouldn't consider themselves programmers. Think HyperCard, Dynamicland, Siri Shortcuts, etcIn other words, it's not just free software. Source code access alone isn't enough

@purism I have a few NexDocks for convergence (though not the 360) and what's turned me off from getting any more is the touchpads are consistently *awful*. Phantom clicks with even the lightest touch and they only emulate a mouse, so those nice multitouch gestures in GNOME are forever out of reachIf that's changed with the 360 I'm interested, but my understanding from those who've bought one is it hasn't. I'd be glad to be wrong though!

@msprout I suspect the contractors and other people doing actual work aren't paying that much, they're getting vans or pickup trucks without a crew cab so they actually have a decent bed to haul stuffI'll bet most people buying those enormous pickup trucks mostly leave the bed empty

@notjustbikes Finally getting around to listening to your previous podcast episode with Reece about Toronto drivers. The bit about driving above the speed limit and aggressive weaving in traffic being normalized in Ontario was really interesting because the northeast US where I live is the same wayDo you know if it's the same further west in Canada as well? I wonder if it's a geographical thing(It's very unpleasant to be around in any case)

@daniel In terms of overall usage: probablyFor those who kept using it afterwards: absolutely not. It's still a rarity for a blog I want to follow *not* to have an RSS feed; support is still pretty ubiquitous

@skyfaller @matrix I agree in general, but they could have relicensed right now to a proprietary license too, so the CLA doesn't really give them any new rights that they didn't have before. That said, the Element team being the primary contributors to the project is itself concerning. I do think that the structure of the Matrix protocol itself limits their ability to do harm thankfully.

@futurebird Seeing those examples where doing it by hand would be too much seems like a good way to show how programming can be useful though!

@mntmn From what I've heard the US government isn't providing key information like "where do we send payment to?" and the exact amounts they need to charge for different products. My gut feeling is that UPS is charging extra to cover the risk of getting it wrong on some packages + the cost of figuring out how to deal with the new systemThat's my feeling because other postal carriers have halted shipments altogether, which makes me think they decided the risk is too great to continue shipping
