@clive My old pal titanium white blows up yet another art forgery. (It’s what got the Vinland Map, too: https://news.yale.edu/2021/09/01/analysis-unlocks-secret-vinland-map-its-fake)

@clive Far as I know the first piece of fine art to use titanium white was Arp's Shirt Front and Fork, 1924. https://www.nga.gov/collection/art-object-page.61452.html

       A) Institutional Review Board sign-off is no guarantee of ethical practice, and B) holy crap you gotta be kidding me with this. Come on. https://www.vice.com/en/article/5d9m3a/horribly-unethical-startup-experimented-on-suicidal-teens-on-facebook-tumblr-with-chatbot

@clive the technical term for that in bioethics is “some fucked up shit.”

Still no restaurant in the garden atop the Transbay Terminal in SF, because the NFT-powered, membership-driven, hyper expensive one that was announced is—no! The deuce you say!—stalled. https://www.sfgate.com/local/article/salesforce-park-sho-restaurant-goes-silent-17858831.php

@clive but Clive! Exploratory search is the issue, right? That’s why people think they like chatbots. Highly trained symbolic analysts are not the modal user.

A way I am dumb is that I would assume that, in general, a person who wanted to be a Supreme Court justice would try to be even more ethical than the official rules demanded. Like, beyond reproach, even. Hah! So dumb.

@clive I’m starting to wonder if this is a consequence in part of so few of the technical papers on LLMs getting peer reviewed? Like Reviewer #2 would definitely make this point.

@clive it’s *possible* that acetaldehyde is a cause of hangover symptoms—nobody really knows. Acetaldehyde is so fleeting that it’s hard to get blood levels, so as far as I know no one has ever associated it cleanly with hangover….

…and it’s *possible* that these folks have made a bacteria that makes an enzyme that breaks down acetaldehyde. But whether they have it packaged in such a way that it survives the trip through your GI tract and delivers that enzyme in quantities large enough to break down the acetaldehyde we make after drinking? Well…

…absent evidence of a strong link to hangover, and absent a good study showing the enzyme produced in a human gut, and absent a good study showing a reduction in perceived symptoms *and* objective markers like inflammatory response? I’m skeptical.
