I'm really sincerely begging the fediverse to recognize the difference between capitalism and commerce. People selling products and services is commerce, which is a good and normal thing. So please stop being weird about artists and artisans who are trying to find their customers on here.

We have layoffs for exactly the same reason we have homelessness. Both are expensive, harmful, and unnecessary. Both are sustained anyway because capitalism requires that work is compulsory. Both exist to be used as a threat to compel work and deference from workers.So, I don't know. Keep writing papers and articles about the real effects of layoffs, I guess. But please understand that you'll never convince boards and CEOs to stop doing them, because the harm of layoffs is the desired outcome. So make your audience the people who've been taken in by their lies, and the people who should be protecting us from them.

To be extra clear, homelessness is what makes layoffs effective as a threat and punishment. And in the USA, withholding health care also plays a large part. These are all escalating levels of violence to the same end of making work compulsory so that they can dictate what work you do, when, where, and to whose benefit.That power to compel and dictate work is what capital is. Money is only a loose proxy for capital, and they will sacrifice enormous amounts of money to retain and expand their power.

@atomicpoet I'm not as convinced that cloudflare doesn't care about the social graph. I'm sure they don't care for the usual surveillance capitalism reasons. But I think they might want to remove people's and communities control over it.This is the company that fought tooth and nail to keep kiwifarm and daily stormer online. And they still protect quite a few lower profile genocide incubators. I can easily imagine they want to prevent their hosted fedi nodes from blocking each other. And we can be pretty sure they won't respond to reports of abuse coming from nodes they host.

@seldo I think to the extent the hawk/dove game applies here, the limited resource that they're competing for isn't browser processing time, it's developer attention. But I don't think it is all that applicable, because as you say these are economic choices in an economic system, not a game.That economy exists in an environment. Degraded performance or accessibility is a negative externality, where the cost is born by the whole environment. Not unlike pollution. Time spent learning can be thought of as a capital investment. And there's a large information asymmetry between Facebook and all other users of React. The end result of that is a highly distorted market for developer attention. Those distortions are good for Facebook and the React team, and bad for other developers and the public.You're right of course, that doesn't make those other developers bad or foolish. Not any more than buying a car to get around car-oriented cities makes people bad or foolish.

@deweyritten Sam Altman is asking for a brand new agency to be created and staffed on his recommendation in order to regulate that AIs won't "escape".That's not a thing. It's sci-fi nonsense. It's like environmental regulations to prevent creating godzilla.What he's actually trying to do is invent a set of rules that only he can win, and establish that he can't be liable for the real harm he does. AI has only ever been a liability laundering machine, and he wants to enshrine that function in law.He's also really desperate not to be regulated by the FTC, because their charter is to prevent and remedy actual harm to actual people.

If there's one lesson I could get all the nice liberals to take from the last few months, it's that being even a little bit supportive of marginalized people will cause the worst people in the world to self select out of your spaces. They'll do it loudly and try to make it maximally uncomfortable for the nice liberals, but then they'll be gone and your spaces will be so much nicer.

Like, I know you loath conflict. I get it. But in the cases it will happen either way? Voicing support for marginalized people will make terrible people leave. You'll always have conflicts, but the stakes you have to deal with get so much lower.
