You know what? My pet peeve is referring to the "tech industry" as though that's a singular thing that makes some kind of sense to talk about. It's not. There's no such thing. It's at least 4 things.1. Telecomunications (mostly ISPs)2. IT professional services (design/development agencies, SaaS companies, and clouds)3. Surveillance (they call themselves ad tech)4. Semiconductor manufacturingSometimes entertainment gets mixed in, but that's its own thing

So, Apple isn't a "tech company." They're a luxury consumer products company, and the product is computers.Microsoft isn't a "tech company." They're an enterprise professional services company that dabbles in product development.Google is an advertising company.Netflix is an entertainment distribution company.Etc.

I'm not just playing word games with alternate names for tech company business models. I'm not criticizing their products. Businesses operate within industrial sectors and subsectors. These things have meaning. And recognizing what sectors a business is in will help you understand why they behave the way they do.
