@hosford42 @ryanhoulihan @bouriquet @fcktheworld587 when I was young, I was almost an extremist on these sorts of topics. As I got a little older I softened my stance. More recently I've come full circle. I'm with Ryan here. The idea of someone else owning your home is ridiculous. Fuck landlords. Fuck the rich. Fuck anyone and everyone who thinks this system is in any way fixable without tearing it all down and starting over. It isn't.

@louis I know he makes people uncomfortable sometimes, but damn do I love it when Linus lets loose on someone really deserving of it.

@stux I'm frankly amazed that there's a 38% here that is willing to take a wait and see on this issue. Don't mix yourselves here people. There is no universe in which Meta joins the fediverse with good intentions and plays nice. What about the people that might bring? Well what about them? If they have an interest there are plenty of free servers that could join. And in case you haven't experienced their platform lately, there's a lot of people on there who would only cause problems here.

@sj_zero @olmitch this is why I don't cut off people I don't entirely agree with. There are shades of gray in the world. That said, there is a strong political and social movement that is seeking to restrict the rights of certain groups. The fact that those who are writing legislation to restrict and harass certain groups are almost certainly doing so for political capitol, while simultaneously ignoring larger issues, does look a lot like fascism. They have a chosen scapegoat just like in 1933.

@olmitch @sj_zero allow me to clarify my stance. Just in 2023 there have been well over 500 bills introduced in the US seeking to restrict transgender related rights, medical care or just simply harass their population. I can see no reason why this provides any positive benefit to any other members of society. It is simply a legislative attack on a targeted group.I am a centrist. Even if I had no compassion for those being targeted I would be pissed that this is how lawmakers spend their time.

@sj_zero @olmitch I agree with that. I don't really have faith in the current brand of liberalism to actually improve people's lives. That said, I'm curious how anyone can really draw fascist parallels. I mostly view them (the democratic party in the US) as inept and disingenuous, not oppressive towards any particular group. And that's probably going to be where we differ. Republicans = actively bullying a minority group. Democrats = kinda inept but not actively hurting people.

My private Gitea instance went down today after a package upgrade. Annoying. Anyway, seems like a good time to evaluate options as it's probably too heavyweight for my own needs anyway. Anyone have any opinions on a good self hosted git viewer alternative? I've used GitWeb previously, but what I'd like is something a bit more attractive (like Gitea) but without necessarily requiring as many interactive features and being light on resources. Bonus if it's written in a compiled language.

@selea @forgejo I did get it working after some troubleshooting last night. There were two separate problems. A stale configuration directive was keeping it from starting, and the other one was a bit of a bug.

@sam @Codeberg I think this strategy has merit but is only feasible after federation is rock solid in forjego. Otherwise you limit contributions to only those willing to add another account.

@stefano you could replace "docker" with "Flatpak" and the post would ring just as true, at least for me.In either case I think the root causes are similar. We have the "move fast and break things" mentality, coupled with language level package managers that actively encourage adding dependencies. It was never easy to write portable code, but modern tooling seems to take the idea of writing truly portable code and throw it out the window by default.

@lowqualityfacts well when you black out and wake up later the next morning in a Tijuana alley missing a tooth and a kidney, it's hard to say whether the headache is from the tequila or just good old fashioned dehydration.

@ajroach42 I understand this position but I find it sad. I have no doubt that literally every cop you have ever known was an asshole and needed a hobby, but I don't see any reason why it has to be that way. My fiance is a 911 dispatcher so she works closely with fire, EMS and the sheriff's deputies. There are definitely a few who are as you described. But having met a number of them myself I don't think it's universal.

@ajroach42 what I've definitely come to understand is that there is no coherent standard to which police are trained. Having that, it's really no surprise that some jurisdictions have little in the way of positive. But I still feel that we definitely need police based on so many interactions I've had with the rest of the public. We absolutely use police for things where they aren't appropriate of course, and I'm not for one second going to defend things like having officers in schools.

Some more honeymoon photos. This time from Cherry Springs State Park in Northern PA.Cherry Springs is a dark preserve. It is located in a remote area to begin with, sits on top of a mountain and there is no artificial light allowed. This makes it one of the best places to view the night sky east of the Mississippi in the continental US.Our first night we didn't think to consider how much the moon would affect the viewing and photos, but it allowed for some cool effects playing with exposure. For our second night, we set an alarm for 3:30AM and arrived at the park just after the moon had set. The photos on this post are from night one.

Photos from night two at Cherry Springs, taken after the moon had set in the hours before dawn. These were 30 second exposures at, so the stars show a slight "track", but this allowed us to bring more distant stars in without going above 800ISO.

@selea I would rather see that than uncontrolled growth. You're the one in charge of deciding when it's "big enough", and all the administration you've done since I joined leads me to believe you'll make a good decision. My 2c on the matter, for what is worth, are that the entire Fediverse is stronger when the various servers all choose to self-limit their size, so that overall control of the network is a spread out as possible. I don't know how many active users we have on this server, but it still feels comfy judging by my feed. I'd hate for that too change, so if you feel like it's getting full, by all means take action.Lastly, thanks for running it. And thanks for upping our word count back when you did that - I think it fosters deeper discussion and I'm glad that we have that opportunity to write a little more in depth on this instance.

I usually don't get really personal on here, since I'm just blasting out into the void. I'll make an exception. I lost my father on Wednesday, and I'm not ok. I don't know if or when I'll be ok. Having to live without ever being able to talk to him or pick his brain on any number of subjects, well let's just say I can't even comprehend living in that world right now. Except that is my world now.

@Nonilex yeah he's not punishing those countries though, is he? He's punishing his own citizens, who are the ones who will be paying.
