Another widefield shot, the Iris Nebula (NGC 7023) and the surrounding dust clouds in the Cepheus constellation.Contrary to emission nebulae which consist of ionized gases that emit light, this is a reflection nebula; interstellar dust clouds that reflect the light of surrounding stars. Given their faint luminosity, emission nebulae are challenging to capture and required dark skies with low light pollution and no moon glow. This image was captured during the new moon, from the dark skies (Bortle 3) of the La Mauricie National Park in Québec 🇨🇦.High resolution, annotated version and technical details on Telescopius: https://telescopius.com/pictures/view/151353/deep_sky/iris-nebula/NGC/7023/bright-nebula/by-drgfreeman#astrophotography #astronomy #nebula #deepsky #photography #astroberry #kstars #ekos #phd2 #raspberrypi #astrodonImage license: CC-BY-NC-SA-4.0

@signalapp Nice feature which, when combined with "note to self", makes a good private reminder app!

@Dtl I learned with this one from Radio Shack. It was pretty nice. I still have it and my son used it about 10 years ago.

@stfn I agree. I think it depends how niche or how broad is the hashtag used. For example, I follow both the python and astrophotography hashtags. While I found some interesting people to follow from the python hashtag, it is very "noisy" in the types of toots it is used in.On the other hand, I feel a little sense of community around the astrophotography hashtag. At least, there is a little core of people who interact on a regular basis with each other's posts. In both cases there are people who publish and interact with responses on their posts but never interact with other's posts on the same hashtag.

SH 2-119 (from the Sharpless catalog of H II regions), also known as the Clamshell Nebula, is an emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus. It is fainter and not as frequently imaged as its western neighbour, the North America Nebula. This image was captured over six nights between July 13 and August 1st. Two different dual narrow-band filters were used to capture the different wavelengths of the sulphur, hydrogen and oxygen emissions.Technical details, high resolution and annotated versions available on Telescopius: https://telescopius.com/pictures/view/195532/deep_sky/open-cluster/sh-2-119/by-drgfreemanImage license: CC-BY-NC-SA 4.0.#astrophotography #astronomy #photography #astrodon #nebula #DeepSky #space #sh2-119 #sho #kstars #ekos #phd2 #DarkTable

This view of @spacetelescope's Digitized Sky Survey (DSS) generated on Telescopius shows the relative position and brightness of SH 2-119 relative to the North America and Pelican Nebulae. The bright star on the top-right is Deneb, the tail of the Cygnus asterism.

Some nights the guiding is poor, some nights it is good. Tonight it is very good. With the RA and Dec curves so flat, I would say it is dead good! With a pixel scale of 1.38"/px and assuming a normal distribution, a <0.3" guiding error means that 99.7% of the time (±3𝜎) the total guiding error is less than a pixel on the main camera!#astrophotography #guiding #phd2

For those not familiar with astrophotography, guiding, or autoguiding, is the process of controlling the movements of the telescope to keep the targets precisely at the same position in the frame over long exposures, generally multiple minutes. While the equatorial mounts used in astrophotography track the sky at the same rate as the earth rotation, this movement is not sufficiently accurate for long exposure images, especially with long focal length optics. Tracking inaccuracies can be caused by different factors, such as an imperfect alignment of the mount's axes with the Earth's rotation axis, or mechanical imperfections in the mount.

The guiding system uses a secondary camera to capture images of stars at intervals of a few seconds while the primary camera captures long exposures. The guiding software analyses the position of stars in the images of the guiding camera. If the stars move, the guiding software sends commands for the mount to move, in an attempt to keep the stars at a fixed location.Good guiding helps with the sharpness of the images by reducing the blur associated with an imprecise tracking movement.

@stfn Guiding conditions can vary a fair amount. I was not able to get better than 1.8" with the exact same setup earlier this week (bad seeing, target near the horizon, few guide stars available). But I agree with you, at 4" there has to be an issue with the mount. I hope the servicing fixes it!

I'm not done with the processing of my Soul Nebula (IC 1848) data but I thought I'd share this little crop from the larger image which has strong "cosmic cliffs" vibes.Image: CC BY-NC-SA 4.0#astrophotography #astronomy #astrodon #ic1848 #nebula #sho #DeepSky #space #darktable #kstars #ekos #phd2 #foss #CreativeCommons #ccbyncsa

@stfn I use a tiny 5 ports PoE switch for my access points. It makes the installation simpler, especially for the one I installed outside.
