Another gift from surplus, an absurdly large PC tower, with dual Pentium motherboard (only one installed CPU though). So - attempt to restore it, stick a raspberry Pi in it, or turn it into a liquor cabinet? Poll to follow

@ParadeGrotesque it does seem to call out for something like that. And possibly it could do double-duty as a space heater

Today's old computer picture is an Apple IIc, single owner, recently (ie, yesterday) donated to the lab. Thinking I should pick up a new power supply before attempting to turn it on.

Time for another old computer picture, in this case a Toshiba T3200 in excellent condition, donated to the collection this morning. (The black bar across the screen is an artifact of photographing the plasma display, not a hardware defect)

Todays gift from Surplus has me thinking that just maybe, it might be possible to have too many DB25 hoods

@robert588 @SDF very cool! A few years ago I had the rare privilege of experiencing the NABU network reconstruction on original hardware at the York University Computer Museum. NABU was truly ahead of its time, and the reconstruction was quite impressive https://museum.eecs.yorku.ca/nabu

@stux Nice to see an implementation of RFC 1149.1 “Standard for the Transmission of IP Datagrams in Weightless Environments”. As I recall the major barrier to widespread adoption was the need to angle the floppy drive precisely enough to deliver packets to the desired recipient over long distances

I'm seeing a whole lot of posts to the effect of "my Mastodon profile is public, so Meta's not getting access to anything they don't have already." But of course they're going to get access to something they don't have right now, namely how we link into their social graph. They don't have that info because it doesn't exist yet. But we will create it for them, one follow at a time.

And the graph is what matters most to them. Right now - yeah, they can scrape Mastodon if they want. But the data really isn't that useful by itself. What makes it useful are the relationships between their already massive social graph and the folks here.
