How often do you get to say it? Progress! NPR will not air Trump live if he speaks about his indictment today, a small win for common sense. (Some might say microscopic.) But if you click and listen to NPR's executive editor, Terry Samuel, this may be the closest we get to NPR conceding that its Trump coverage 2016 to now didn't work because it tried to use normal tools and assumptions. To me that's significant, and it almost never happens.https://www.npr.org/2023/04/03/1167856064/a-peek-behind-the-curtain-of-nprs-coverage-of-trumps-indictment#uspol #journalism #npr

"The settlement also spared the company and its executives of being bound by the laws of reality during trial." https://view.newsletters.cnn.com/messages/1681876038852675017264eb1/rawYes. For me this is why the settlement was such a letdown. The discovery phase included many wins for the reality-based, but the settlement gave up on that. https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/04/18/dominion-fox-settlement-apology/Fox could thus say in its only statement that handing over $787.5 million "reflects Fox's continued commitment to the highest journalistic standards."#Fox #journalism #uspolitics

Not the odds, but the stakes. That's my shorthand for the organizing principle we most need in journalists covering the 2024 campaign. Not who has what chances of winning, but the consequences for American democracy. Not the odds, but the stakes. This report from the Washington Post is getting there. Have a read of it and tell me if you see what I mean. https://wapo.st/41yXOmI [Gift link, no paywall]#journalism #USpol #journalists

@kingkaufman Yeah, the use of the term "conservative" in mainstream newswriting has lost all logic. No one knows what they're saying when they use it.

The debt limit sprains the both sides brain.Read Dan Froomkin: "Extremist Republicans have been enabled by media coverage that tries to split the difference, and treats what is essentially a hostage crisis created exclusively by one side as a normal, two-sided partisan squabble. Indeed, our top political reporters now insist that the onus is on Biden to solve the problem."https://presswatchers.org/2023/04/republicans-threaten-to-tank-economy-media-blames-biden/#uspol #journalists #journalism

This is an outstanding reply to, and analysis of that Pamela Paul column in the New York Times that began this way:"A paper that says science should be impartial was rejected by major journals. You can’t make this up."Dave Karpf, an academic, takes it apart. He also testifies as a particiant in the peer review system. Worth your time.https://davekarpf.substack.com/p/pamela-paul-cancel-culture-grifters?utm_medium=ios#nytimes #journalism #peerreview #science

I have a new approach when I am asked to go on TV, which happens once in a while. Usually it's MSNBC, sometimes CNN under the old regime. My new goal is to introduce a term or concept that has not been heard before on network television. A few weeks ago it was "verification in reverse" on Maddow. On May 11 (The 11th Hour) it was "not the odds, but the stakes," which I had pre-tested in Twitter and Mastodon. Let me know if it worked: https://www.msnbc.com/11th-hour/watch/fallout-from-trump-town-hall-174063173939#journalists #uspol #science

This is something you should know about. From CJR. https://www.cjr.org/the_media_today/amanpour_sulzberger_licht_baron_lowery_objectivity.php"In the lead-up to the 2024 presidential campaign, the bosses are speaking out. In interviews and op-eds, senior figures in the world of American journalism are pushing back against critics of traditional 'objectivity,' hoping to reset the tone as newsrooms enter a political season that will likely be more tainted by disinformation and more dangerous for reporters than any in recent memory."#uspol #journalism

My shorthand for the approach we most need in election coberage is this:"Not the odds, but the stakes."How does this work in practice? Margaret Sullivan answers that in The Guardian today. "Now’s the time to think about just how bad a DeSantis presidency would be." https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/may/25/ron-desantis-florida-record-presidential-campaign?CMP=Share_iOSApp_OtherNot how DeSantis plans to outwit Trump and then succeed in "the general" (itself an insidery phrase...) but what life would be like if he took power. Not the odds, but the stakes.#uspol #journalism

He doesn't think much of the "both sides" critique, says New York Magazine's Jonathan Chait, but he agrees that last weekend the New York Times published a report that amounts to the "platonic ideal" of both-sidesing it.The author was Carl Hulse of the Times Washington bureau, known for this sort of thing. (And what a thing to win renown for...)Chait's critique:https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2023/05/debt-ceiling-congress-blame-republicans-democrats-default-new-york-times.htmlPlatonic ideal piece: [gift link]https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/19/us/politics/debt-ceiling-economy.html?unlocked_article_code=9oOueyaXDXm5RRY_KsCjd7LusM64Wwra5b9l2yyF8vP7ehM9-cL0-SCA2r14YX4oCWLRwLX3oVLE3xD0wQwilQw1JbbI-0qYXRaDpZ8ojJ8tV23Vbp-sy9QbvT6bOlTPk43zh-IYh20m0LMkf_dx5NtDlzzmSBblEam7MOpVTJs7wXQdHa2rEqjlVgGcE6uTvn3v2Zr4gyjpmzgtHYEv8Iog5vTZyM2_PGUNbwNQQP7zBlulhHfKjdcktWbshT87fQy0muBJvT1uGpJ9l_4A7PwaT8J1HdEo3c-1CjidtR_7o_RFw8MDLnS-aKXjEAbac3ddpDw7gYbzB3zC9o-6DshS&smid=url-share#uspol #journalismus #journalism

It's wired in, it's blatant, and it's old news, but to me it remains pretty remarkable that the establishment press in the U.S. uses the term "conservative" to mean any action the extreme right wing favors. The more extreme the act, the more "conservative" are the actors! Thus, the Freedom Caucus in the House — the members of which are the most ready to let the U.S. default on its debt — are routinely described as the most conservative faction in the government. #uspol #science #journalism

He doesn't know it and now he's gone, but Chris Licht's plan for CNN was an ideological project. Here, Washington Post columnist Perry Bacon, Jr. describes what that project is."This anti-woke centrism often sounds as though people are auditioning to be today’s version of the 'white moderates' the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. castigated six decades ago..."To my mind it's a brilliant take down of centrism. See if you agree. https://wapo.st/43qDOUl #uspol #science #journalism

Amazing story. Have you followed it? Texas A&M announces a new journalism dean. She's black and she's qualified— and an alum of the school! Ex-New York Times too. They announce her appointment in a splashy event.Dark forces of reaction mobilize. The offer is watered down to one year, with no tenure. She says no way, and withdraws. National news is made. It's negative. And today, the president of A&M resigns! https://www.texastribune.org/2023/07/21/tamu-president-resign-journalism/https://www.texastribune.org/2023/07/11/texas-a-m-kathleen-mcelroy-journalism/#journalism #uspol #science

"Describing [RFK's] views as ‘controversial,’ I think, is dishonest. They’re not controversial. They’re false. He’s not spreading controversial views, he’s spreading lies. And so the framing matters enormously, and that’s something that I foresee being a huge, huge issue in the 2024 campaign."Agreed! Some key distinctions made by journalist Seth Mnookin in this sharp interview. (He wrote a book about the anti-vaccine movement in 2011.) https://www.huffpost.com/entry/robert-f-kennedy-jr-seth-mnookin-panic-virus-deadly-immunity-interview_n_64c137b7e4b0ad7b75fadc32#journalism #uspol #science

CNN headline today:"McCarthy starts to plot Biden impeachment strategy while GOP skeptics remain."What the GROUNDS for impeachment might be is addressed in paragraph nine. CNN thus buries the lede of a more striking story: a vibes-based approach, where you establish first the feeling, "we wanna impeach," relegating the small matter of "impeachment for what?" to later stages. That's news! Instead CNN frames for us another strategy story.https://www.cnn.com/2023/08/28/politics/mccarthy-biden-impeachment-strategy/index.html#journalism #uspol #science

Note to repliers. I"m not trying to suss out what McCarthy is up to. It's pretty obvious. My concern is with the journalists at CNN, and what they do in response to this kind of maneuver. Do they make a strategy story from it? Is that the right frame?Or is the news the outlandish idea of impeachment in the abstract, with evidence to come later in the process? First the action, then the cause of action, is pretty Alice in Wonderland of them. To me that's the news.
