@chidgey Thanks John. Elon was the impetus, but I'm liking it. 😄

@chidgey One could argue we're a bit old for this kind of thing. But you got it done!

@freemo @obi @trinsec @khird That sums it up for me: as long as you believe the ToC you’re changing to, then no problem. Regardless of the baying mob! The bright line is when you change it to something you don’t believe. To your proposed wording change, what “ideologies” do you have in mind? I do like the distinction between an individual’s opinion (which is okay), and spruiking for a hate group (actionable).I specifically chose qoto because it wouldn’t penalise an individual’s personal beliefs if expressed if they happen to be unpopular. Not that I personally have a lot of those, but that academic freedom should be the right of any individual in a free society.

@freemo @obi @trinsec @khird Ah, now I get it. I was imagining some kind of more formalised, perhaps named, ideologies. My mistake! Looks solid to me, and shouldn’t limit genuine conversation, while eliminating actual hate speech by bad actors.

@freemo @taz For what it's worth, that's why I picked QOTO. Besides the general theme being appealing, the ToS were specifically the kind of environment I was after. The other instances seemed to be locked down tight, with any kind of wrongthink strictly prohibited. Maybe I'm overstating it. :)

Remember in the pre-internet days when you had to go to the library to lookup facts? Or your own (outdated) set of encyclopaedias?I guess we just didn't know any better at the time, and lived with ambiguity! Hard to imagine now.

@trinsec Maybe we weren't so badly off! But I really, really enjoy being able to look up facts in near real time, though. I find myself not wanting to go back.I thought teaching kids critical thinking at school might help inoculate them to conspiracy garbage. Maybe it would? I guess it hasn't really been tried yet.

I'm sure this is unoriginal, but it seems that with ChatGPT and similar AI text bots, we have created philosophical zombies (p-zombies).They have learned to talk like us, based on everything we've said on the internet. However, there's no sentience present at all.In other words, we have created a (mostly) convincing simulacrum of a human that we can text chat with. But it has no mind, no sense of self, no consciousness. There is no risk of it becoming self-aware, because that's not how these neural networks work.Is this a step on the path towards AGI (Artificial General Intelligence)? Yes. But even AGI doesn't mean sentience. It leads to a fascinating ethical question: what rights does a p-zombie have?If it talks like a human, but effectively the lights are on but no one's home, do we treat it like one of us? For now, I'd say no; they just smart machines, constructs created to serve us. Ultimately, the test for AI rights has to be sentience, not convincing repartee.

I'm really glad to see that #HogwartsLegacy is doing well in spite of the hysterical campaign by misguided tech journos, which actually helped promote it! All because @jk_rowling is mistakenly perceived to be transphobic. It's insane.https://fortune.com/2023/02/08/hogwarts-legacy-harry-potter-video-game-boycott-rowling-transphobia-warner-discovery-avalanche/

@hughster It's certainly the zeitgeist. When I've looked at what she's said, the theme is consistently protecting the rights of natal women, particularly against natal men. She has no animus for trans people generally, and genuinely supports their human rights. I don't believe that makes her transphobic, but rather a feminist who won't sacrifice women's rights.

@hughster Is that the entire corpus of evidence? That she 'liked' the tweets of an individual with questionable views? What has she said publicly that could be considered transphobic?

@hughster That's too indirect for me. I choose to interpret who beliefs and position based upon her own words, in her 2020 essay, and what she's said publicly. I understand this is an unfashionable position, and could be considered wrongthink, but I can't violate my own sense of integrity by doing otherwise.

This picture, courtesy of our national broadcaster, somehow captures the essence of being Australian. Voting is mandatory for all adults, is always on a Saturday, and can be done on the way to the beach.

@freemo It's only $AUD20. Mandatory voting does have an upside: it means that everyone votes, not just the politically motivated at either end of the spectrum, and the consequence is that our governments are inevitably centrist, as they have to appeal to the middle (i.e. normal people) to get elected. It's not all bad. :)
