My son has just started to use Project Bluefin as his first Linux "daily driver", while its certainly an interesting project, it uses GNOME as its primary DE.Last night I was helping him troubleshoot his Steam (flatpak) install as it was having issues launching Forza 5, while we eventually resolved that I was reminded of an old adage from when I started using Linux 20 years ago."Friends don't let friends use GNOME"This may be because I am now a 10 year+ user of KDE (previously RatPoison and various dynamic tiling WM's) and find the user experience of GNOME painfully "meh!"He is however happy with his choice and we should all learn from our experiences and choices directly and not have our bad decisions influenced by others, even family.CC: @BrodieOnLinux@mstdn.social

@stevelord@bladerunner.social @yvan@toot.ale.gd @grunfink@comam.esYvan, the simplest fediverse server I've found is Snac behind Caddy on Debian stable with backports active (2 apps to install and a few minutes to configure)I'm still on the previous release (2.59) but this way. however, it should just upgrade via apt once the Debian maintainer packages 2.61

Today I spotted that Snac2 in Debian backports had been updated to 2.62 one "apt update && apt upgrade" (and a reboot) later and here I am posting from Snac2 version 2.62If you want a easy to install easy to maintain Fediverse instance, it does not get much simpler than Debian (NetInst) + Caddy + (Bookworm Backports) snac2 although I'd also suggest UFW be installed too. Thanks as always to @grunfink@comam.es for making such a light and easy Fediverse server and the Debian package maintainers @jvalleroy@fosstodon.org & Sergio for making it easy to maintain and upgrade

#Snac2 in Debian backports now updated to version 2.63.My "pure Debian" fediverse server now effortlessly upgraded by apt update && apt upgrade. Thanks as usual to @jvalleroy@fosstodon.org and @sergiodj@snac.sergiodj.net for the Debian package and @grunfink@comam.es for continuing to develop and improve Snac2Now that #freedombox has #Nextcloud and access to #snac2 in the repos, it makes that project look all the more enticing as a one stop self hosting solution.

I run my Debian + Caddy + Snac2 Instance on a ~$25 per year VPS from Racknerd although I suspect it would work fine on an $11 per year VPS and still have plenty of resources left for a few other services.A few minutes after upgrading to the latest release in backports, htop shows it uses 118mb of RAM out of 2,5GB (see image) and free -h looks like thisfree -htotal used free shared buff/cache availableMem: 2.4Gi 268Mi 2.0Gi 1.9Mi 297Mi 2.1GiSwap: 1.2Gi 0B 1.2GiThis is much lighter than my previous Pleroma instance and its a lot easier to update/upgrade via apt.For anyone interested here's a Shameless plug for my Racknerd affiliates link (some pretty good black Friday deals there )https://my.racknerd.com/aff.php?aff=12556CC: @grunfink@comam.es

Due to Mozilla's seemingly never ending shitfuckery since the days of the looking-glass "experiment" I am strongly considering a move away from Firefox/ThunderbirdI only use firefox as an occasional browser and will simply use librewolf and brave browser more, however Thunderbird does not have any clear replacementOpinions as to how Vivaldi Mail stacks up against Thunderbird and other email clients are welcomed

I just updated the VPS server I run this instance on from Debian Bookworm to Debian Trixie, seemingly without issueAs I use the Snac2 Debian package provided by @sergiodj@snac.sergiodj.net from Debian Backports, I had to adjust some settings so that it would continue to be updatedFirst I modernised the apt sources post Trixie upgrade with 'sudo apt modernize-sources' , then edited my backports entry to match the Trixie entry here https://backports.debian.org/Instructions/ and ran 'apt update'Once the sources were updated I reinstalled Snac2 by running 'apt install -t trixie-backports snac2' which updated the existing Snac2 package to 2.83I then rebooted the server for good measure and started typing thisMy thanks to @grunfink@comam.es @sergiodj@snac.sergiodj.net along with all the folks at Debian that make this as easy as it isIf anyone is looking for an affordable VPS to run their own Snac2 instance or other server........shameless referral link here https://my.racknerd.com/aff.php?aff=12556Click on the reveal deals banner at the top of the page to get a VPS for as little as $11 per year (thats less than £9)

@hund@fosstodon.orgThis kind of attack is happening way to often.@BrodieOnLinux@mstdn.social is probably prepping a video as a follow up to the aur malware video earlier this year
