@kevI used to use jekyll, but found it a bit laboriousI am now looking to start blogging againI'm currently (still) looking at that middle ground between the behemoths like WordPress and the super light SSG's, the world of 'flat file' databaseless CMS and Blogs. The flat file concept seems like a more user friendly way to blog than SSG's, without the need of setting up a database ectIn regards to hosting solutions, I am trialing Oracle Cloud atm, and so far its been a good experience It is possible to create up to 6 VPS's on there 'always free' tier, (2 x 1GB RAM single x86 core, and 4 x arm ampere cores and 24gigs RAM to distribute over up to 4 instances) and spread 200GB block storage and 10TB of ingress traffic amonth between them, so I should have the ideal platform for whichever solution I end up choosing Once my 'trial period' on Oracle Cloud ends and I'm truely on their 'always free' tier, I will make a decision which way i'll start blogging (they aparently wipe/delete the trial VPS created at the end of 'trial period', but allow you to reset it up after)Also included is 10GB of object storage which I understand may be good for a SSG site if I do end up going there@rzg

I'm now using the darkside for the power of good, and to reduce my financial outgoings. My pleroma instance is now running on Oracle Cloud 'always free' VPS.1 CPU 1GB RAM, 47GB storage.Thats twice the RAM (and seemingly CPU power) than my previous paid for VPS.If you are interested in switching to Oracle Cloud 'always free' for any webserver based projects, be aware you will probably waste a lot of time figuring out that you need to specifically allow ports 80 and 443 using both the Oracle Cloud dashboard and iptables within the distro you use to allow traffic. (Not as straight forward as it sounds)I ended up having flush the iptables firewall rules then install UFW, then flush the tables again and reinstall UFW, then set up UFW to allow ssh and nginx, prior to enabling it, the VPS froze for a while after (5-7 mins) then allowed me to log in.

OK, I'm gonna #askthefediverse about this I have a USB-C dock that I connect my keyboard, mouse and monitor to (via display port). In Windows when I shutdown the dock switches off power to the keyboard and mouse killing the back lights on both.In Debian (my daily driver) when I shutdown, the Keyboard and Mouse remain powered / Lit forcing me to boot into windows to actually poweroff. (which is very, very annoying)Does anyone out there know if there a 'poweroff'/'shutdown' Flag or configuration I can use so the shutdown in Debian turns off the USB's like Windows does. I have been digging for this but cant seem to solve it, and I hate, really truly hate when Windows does something better than Linux Thoughts, Ideas and boots welcome

@gray @kev @mike I decommissioned my homeserver and unnecessary network components to save around 45 watts an hour.45watts an hour over the course of the year (8 is 394.2 kWh - based on ('hours in use' x 'kilowats per hour') there are 8160 hours in a a non leap yeari.e: (24hrs/day x 365days) x (45watts/1000) = 394.2 kWhMy unit price is 20.40p per kWhMy years homeserver/decommissioned electrical items usage in pence for the year is 394.2 x 20.04 = 8041.68pWhich if my math holds up means saving of around £80.41p per year (based on my providers historical use based quoted amounts) Where I can I'm moving a lot of my homeserver's functionality to my 'always free' Oracle cloud and let them pay it for me lol

I'm seeing quite a bit of talk about the lack of web browser rendering engines and web browsers in general. It got me thinkingIs anybody out there still using #SeaMonkey as their daily driver web browser? If so how does it hold up with the modern web?It may be a reasonable alternate to both Mozilla's flagship browser and its forks, and the various colours of blink highlighted by recent videos from @thelinuxEXP and @ChrisWere

@urusan @tk While 'social media' could be said to have its roots in the likes of BBSes, Forums, chatrooms and IRC, each of those tend to attract 'smaller' groups of people mostly with common interests/goals, some good some very not so.For the most part they were/are moderated by members of the communities they represented, and within them bad actors only had the limited reach of those communities (and flamewars were mostly contained)The prevalence of modern 'social media' is a breading ground for mob mentality and bad behavior at a scale that simply had not previouly been possible. 'wrong/badthink' concepts that 20-30 years ago would only attract tens or hundreds of people can now attract hundreds, thousands or even tens of thousands, creating movements in their wake. Mostly without any form of community policing to temper extremesAnd yes this also applies to good concepts/movements too, without comunity moderation there will always be extreme representations of those concepts/movements The nature/structure of many centalised 'social media' platforms removes the community policing elements of the BBSes, Forums, chat, IRC chstrooms by design. There is nobody there to kickban troublemakers or douse the early licks of a flamewar or dangerous commentary. The fediverse adds the potential for this moderation back into the mix.So I guess what I'm trying to surmise is that, Yes 'social media' is inherently bad, but it doesn't have to be.

Not so keen on the new fedilab app design. The requirement to install an additional app for notifications (and that app seemingly have a permanent presence at the top of my phone) has finally made my mind up to move to using tuskySo long @apps its been good but for now im heading to @Tusky maybe if I become less bothered by ntfy I'll be back

@apps thanks for clarifying, from the text after I carried out the update, it read that the only way to receive *any* notifications is to use a push subscription provider, as the previous notification method has been removedI installed ntfy to try, and if it did it without adding (yet) another icon to the top of my phone I may have kept it.But in all honesty, if the only way to get any notifications for fedilab is to install an additional app I wont use for anything else then I'd consider it bloat, as it would have no other purpose. For now I'll try out Tusky, but if they switch to the same method I may return

@thelinuxEXP @Suiseiseki Its just 'Linux' in the same way a Car is a just a 'Car'.Or could you find yourself taking a drive in a Volkswagen Passat diesel combustion engine automobile?Overcomplicated naming schemes are contrary to user adoption Simplification for conversational convenience is how nomenclature should workSo Linux is Linux regardless of which userspace is paired with. As long as it works most users won't actually care, and those that do will check first

@Suiseiseki OK, lets go… if I was to do a car analogy, “Linux” would be the engine and GNU plus the software that runs on it is the rest of the car Nope you fail the analogy game, you are focusing on parts not the ubiquitous whole, a “car” is the overall product as defined by popular use, you are describing an engine and part of the housing that makes a car. That is only needed should you choose to select a specify type of car. A “Car” may be internal combustion (Diesel, Petrol, LPG), Electric or Hybrid either way it is just a ‘Car’ despite how ‘fancy’, modern or out of date its components are. This is analogous to the popular nomenclature of “Linux” being a landscape covering all Linux+ (a choice of userland). Its the same that when people discuss “BSD” a ‘landscape’ term that in general discussion may cover Free,Open,Net,Ghost or Midnight Which is similar to ‘OS’ / Operating System covers Linux, BSD , Windows, MacOS and even GNUHurd (that’s the one for you, although honestly its not popular enough for popular nomenclature to do its thing yet – I propose calling it ‘hURD’ – soft ‘h’ hard URD)GNU/Linux is not complicated at all - it’s 4 extra characters.True, but it only covers a part of the landscape that “Linux” covers not all Linux is GNU but “Linux” includes the subset of GNU/Linux but not GNU/hURDYou are looking out of your window and only seeing your garden, not the neighbourhood or town your garden is part of. Great, so shorten it to just GNU - shorter to say evenBut it only refers to a narrow subset of a greater whole, this comment is rated FAIL, maybe even HARDFailYes, Linux is Linux no matter what other software you use, but it’s wrong to call things that aren’t Linux, “Linux”.Linux is a word, reread the above if you are still confused about how the word Linux may be used, or look up how words like read, lead, light and engine can be used. It really should not be that difficult to understand the evolution of how words work. As detailed, just Linux will NOT work on its own.But Linux as part of “Linux” most definitely works, regardless of which parts make it up. Stop worrying, there is a place for GNU as part of ”Linux”, although “Linux” will continue to grow and GNU will become a smaller part of an ever growing ecosystem of distros, userlands and people not actually caring as long as their Linux will enable them to get online, game, surf (and sadly soon join the metaverse) @thelinuxEXP

@Andrzej The 600 had a dead drive, and multiple intermittent system board errors. Cant remember thevexact errors for that, but 3 or 4 different ones during the diagnostic tests along with standard errors like 08611, 0301, A0, 00317, 197,163 which I mostly fixed.I have no more ide drives to try here but have some at my mothers. The 600 was built from your broken 600x, my knackered 600e and a spares repair 600 I got from eBayThe T21 and T23 don't start up, power button is pressed and the hard drive light flashes once, but no power starts up, will troubleshoot next weekend
