@fsf almost every modern browser destroys user freedom, imho.If I visit a page using Icecat, allowing only free JavaScript, how exactly do I assert my freedom? The browser will just execute the JavaScript as served by the site, without any way for me to change anything, add a hook, replace a function, free or nonfree alike, no?

@lxo @fsf exactly, so while I don't want to advocate indifference or even nonfree JavaScript, advocating free JavaScript doesn't help software freedom in any way. What we need is an Emacs-like, user freedom respecting/enabling browser.

@lxo @fsf how on earth am I supposed to run my government or bank website out of my own server? Please enlighten me how you exercise your user freedom with free JavaScript in these scenarios.

@lxo @fsf we don't need browsers that are (almost) free software, we need a browser that will enable user freedom.

@cmsdengl you cannot install Linux, it's just a kernel. You need to pick an operating system such as Debian GNU/Linux,.or GNU Guix.

TIL that adding a link to the Free Software Foundation (FSF)'s "What is Free Software" page in a youtube comment seems to cause the comment to be silently removed within a minute or so.<https://www.fsf.org/about/what-is-free-software>#youtube #peertube #FreeSoftware

@MMRnmd "THE RECENT INCIDENT involving Microsoft...should send a chill..."Well, only if you have been living under a rock since 1983. Some of us have been foreseeing this, been writing about this, and have been taken action since the early eighties. Most every year there is such an incident. And it has very little if anything to do with Microsoft or with the US. If you're running proprietary software, you are being controlled and all bets are off.The only way to be in control of your computing is to use free software. And as an aside: using free software from the US is fine.#freeSoftware@rms @fsf

@musicmatze Supporting big tech and Microsoft: Yay! (GitHub).Defending user freedom and acknowledging the heritage and history of free software: Nay! (Shoulders of Giants, what's that even mean?).Also: Injecting and running opaque binaries: Yay! A bootstrappable software stack: Nay! etc.To each their own, I guess.

@uutils @fosdem Yes! The Full-Source Bootstrap, as pioneered by #Guix (https://guix.gnu.org/es/blog/2023/the-full-source-bootstrap-building-from-source-all-the-way-down/), to address the widely ignored #TrustingTrust problem is being ported to/implemented by @nixos_org It would be amazing to see it in @debian / @ubuntu too and I'm a bit puzzled about what the introduction of Rust might do to what we have accomplished?

Great talk by @samuel_wade of #GNU #Hurd fame, in a packed room, selling the the Hurd really well (in my not entirely unbiased opinion, of course) and starting with It's all about Freedom #0,and also Freedom from the system administrator. We know all about that, isn't right #Guix folks? And although @debian is really still carrying and championing the Hurd effort, plenty of attribution to the work of others, mentioning Guix at least three times!#fosdem #debian
