How many people in the fediverse know me from another platform, I wonder? And, for those who do, are we able to communicate better using the tools that are available here?

@tauli wow, this is some heavy duty damned if we do, damned if we don't. If the trolls and the gamergaters find us, it's our fault. If we can't be found and lose part of our livelihood, its our fault. Also, as we know, the trolls already know where we are. Good to know.

I deserve UBI, and so do you. This occurred to me the other day while searching for the 4-digit code for the pineapple I was purchasing from my local grocery store. Q: When did I become a checkout clerk?A: Shortly after the job became automated. A robot didn't steal the checkout clerk's job - not really. The robot distributes the checkout clerk's duties to the grocery store's customers. To you and me.If that were my only unpaid part-time job, (1/n)

maybe the time I spend weekly as a volunteer checkout clerk wouldn't amount to much. But that's not my only part-time unpaid job. As an American taxpayer, it falls to me to be figure out how much to pay the State and Federal governments, with significant legal and financial penalties if I make a mistake. Of course there are significant penalties if I make a mistake as a checkout clerk, too. A keystroke error could make a shoplifter of me. (2/n)

Those penalties pale in comparison to the consequences of my regular stint as a volunteer part-time gas station attendant. Not only do I absorb small amounts of toxins, but a lapse in attention could cause a toxic spill or even a fire. Those aren't my only unpaid part-time gigs. I'm also a billing assistant, medical insurance clerk, patient advocate, purchasing agent, research assistant, and occasional travel agent. But, wait! there's more!(3/n)

I'm also an admittedly slovenly maid, a pretty good cook, if I do say so myself, and the household's tech support, all unpaid. The most important part of my unpaid labor is of course as an elder caregiver to my mother, and I'm learning a lot from this job. Like she remembers early automated restaurants. She says you could see the kitchen staff putting the food in the little windows, but everyone pretended it was all automatic. (4/n)

@andrej Each generation of technically skilled people is indoctrinated to believe that they know more/better than anyone before or after them, and that their technical specialty makes them gods among mortals. This fantasy makes far too many IT workers willing accomplices in their own exploitation, even as they exploit each other. When someone burns out or is pushed out, the remaining IT workers are encourage to think that person couldn't cut it, rather than that they are probably next

@andrej None of this is meant to blame the IT workers for their situation. An issue is that direct hires, contract IT workers, and temps are all pitted against each other, as are the various technical specialties. Unionization efforts normally only address the employment contracts for direct hires of a particular company. Not its contracted workers nor the temps. An IT union would have to include _all_ IT workers, even the ones grinding away online and being paid by the piece.

@andrej unions (at least as they exist in the US) are not well organized to address the sort of flexibility that has existed around tech in particular and employment in general since the beginning of my working career. It makes no sense to have to start over with a new union and a loss of seniority when moving from one company to the next. Those sorts of jobs where a worker lived in the same town and worked for the same company were on their way out before I graduated high school.

@jacethechicken startup: we don't have enough women ready and willing to screw over humanity for the sake of hoarding cash, we need a new program in schools to teach little girls how to be shallow, rapacious mercenaries.

TIL the cancer my grandmother died of was one of the ones doctors always want to know if anyone in your family had. Now, I can understand why she didn't tell me what kind of cancer was killing her, even though I knew she had cancer and I saw her every single day. I was 9 years old at the time.I don't get why no one with the information said anything until now, decades later. I should have been getting screened all along, ffs.

@feld @jeff We're already paying that price, and much, much more. How many of us are messed up beyond all reason by having a parent come back either a domestically abusive alcoholic or emotionally unavailable? Or not at all? How does that rattle down the generations? Yes, I am speaking from experience, so don't either of you even think about 'splaining this to me, or I will block you without a moment's hesitation.
