PhD Progress: another 2500 words today and finally a workable first draft of the beastly background chapter. This week focussing on scientometrics. Now aiming for a first draft of the whole thesis by the end of July (https://brainsteam.co.uk/notes/2022/07/10/1657469414/)

@urusan recently saw a linkedin "self congratulation porn" post about a guy who nearly bankrupted his company because they forgot to turn off some AWS services and the moral of the story was "this was a challenge and now I'm more resilient and can get through a crisis" rather than "f*** AWS and their crazy opaque billing system"

hey @dajb - I'm getting weird behaviour if I look at your @thoughtshrapnel RSS feed - if I subscribe in FreshRSS or visit it in-browser I get an outdated snapshot from June. if I access via curl or Aperture feed reader I get new articles. Am I using it wrong? Pastebin of the feed content if I go via browser: https://privatebin.net/?7261083dc0a23738#6jYXp7y4QSZn7UU23kpt1HmRSJckuW5Dq9NZiJY4MDdR

Phd thesis submitted, 7 years in the making! I’m PHinisheD (thanks to Mrs R for the mug). Now to prepare for a much needed holiday before the dreaded viva (https://brainsteam.co.uk/notes/2022/09/09/1662742877/)

@dajb @thoughtshrapnel @noeldemartin very weird! I can re-create it across different browsers and in "private browsing" too - I guess I'll have to visit the site periodically to get the updates or get the email newsletter πŸ˜‰

@simon I think if you take journalism as a model (people are more likely to blindly trust articles that they agree with and strongly criticise material that they disagree with) I'd hypothesise that people will do the same with chatbots - only questioning what they read if they don't like what it says. This will be exacerbated by chatbots being super confident and subtly wrong and having to look harder to find the problems which you won't want to do if you agree with the output

@simon yes possibly or I wonder if you'd see some version version of Knoll's law of media accuracy where people are happy to trust the bot on stuff they don't know much about but more distrustful when they know about the subject matter or they have strong biases one way or another?

@codewiz the 100M users figure is definitely in dispute - its likely closer to 30M @swyx article discusses this: https://lspace.swyx.io/p/ok-foomer

@simon small LMs that run on a single machine (SLMs?) are so exciting! There are also other promising works that outperform GPT-3 at specific tasks after some fine tuning (e.g. Schick + Schutze PET and GenPET https://arxiv.org/pdf/2012.11926.pdf) PET will happily both train + infer on my 12GB VRAM TitanX card. I am excited about the potential of these techniques to truly democratise NLP instead of "democratisation" based on a chosing one of the proprietary APIs from 3-5 BigTechCos

@team this is so important. My PhD would not have been possible without access to historical archives of news articles. I've been using #NLP to automatically "read" news articles that talk about science and help the scientists find. These articles can then be shared with funding bodies and simply as personal momentos that demonstrate the impact of the scientists' on wider society. Censoring these activities prevents all sorts of beneficial analyses like mine.

@funnylookinhat @jamesravey@brainsteam.co.uk thanks! I built the pc a couple of years back with an AMD Ryzen 5200+ and 32GB ram, upgraded the GPU to an RTX4070 this year. It can run most games without breaking a sweat which is great πŸ˜…

Seems the slightly better antennae I got with the 2nd heltec that came yesterday has been able to ping some nodes in Gosport and mesh-hopped into Portsmouth. Unfortunately it’s not strong enough to have picked up much more than the device shortnames. The new Parador 5dbi mast I picked up yesterday should fix that… Not addicted I promise πŸ˜…#meshtastic (https://brainsteam.co.uk/notes/2024/10/21/1729496698/)
