@futurebird from your description I thought “Liminality” might be fitting, although a quick search shows me that its already in use in anthropology so… ¯_(ツ)_/¯ 🤔

@futurebird assigning code broken in specific ways & having a rubric for teaching the troubleshooting sounds like it should be SOP for coding courses, is this not normally part of the curriculum? 🤔 (def not dumping on you, asking as an Old who is a self-taught potato coder who never did a CS degree & feels like the way I learned basically anything that I do know was: type it in from a magazine or other source / modify working code that’s similar to what I need -> make mistakes in transcription / tweaks -> code doesn’t run or runs with errors -> troubleshoot the mistakes -> learn stuff 🙃)

@futurebird maybe you could start by introducing the concept of character sets (ASCII probably being the most “obvious” one to start with) so that the students get familiar /comfortable with the idea that even “simple” things like numbers & letters are encoded in computer-land, which could then flow into a discussion of both bases & variables 🤔       ^ I’d suggest also the Unicode emoticons / emoji block for the fun factor but then you’re into multi-byte encodings & modifiers which seems you’d probably be throwing students into the deep end waaay too soon

@futurebird they live in a Bizarro World of their own imagination, so it wouldn’t surprise me to see them do exactly this. these are the same people who look at Orwell’s 1984 as an instruction manual rather than a cautionary tale (those who read books, like the Project 2025 authors), while accusing their enemies (basically anyone to the left of Mussolini) of using the Orwellian tactics that they so blatantly employ themselves

@lightweight @vik any specific models you’d recommend? I’m interested in something small & light (13-14”) and also something smallish (14”ish) with a GPU (I’m aware that those two may not coexist in one laptop)

@futurebird this reminded me that I bookmarked something that I suspect will be extremely relevant to your interests (if you don’t already have one / several)… Full Size Ant Insect Soft Stuff Plush Toy https://www.gagebeasleyshop.com/products/full-size-ant?_pos=1&_sid=6e04c9c50&_ss=r I’m greatly amused by their use of “full size” – I look forward to them releasing a “large” version… 😲

@futurebird their emails are generally batched up & sent via #NASA mail servers, and any web browsing opportunities will go through NASA proxies, so it could be tricky it’s not that hard to generate a complete list of NASA mail servers & map those to back IP addresses in email headers, but that would likely only give you confidence that “someone at #JPL” emailed you – and if they used their NASA email address then it’s much easier to map the IPs from their email headers (back to a specific NASA mail server but it might not be specific enough to give you confidence that they were in space when they sent it 🙃) the same technique can probably get you a reasonable subset of NASA proxy servers, but it might be difficult to map those proxies back to specific NASA orgs or business units - you’re unlikely to get any IPs in your web server logs that resolve back to (e.g.) integrity.orion.artemis.proxy.jpl.nasa[.]gov… 😜
