@ricci they could just ask whether you want it to be portrait or landscape orientation – and, y’know, default to the primary page orientation in your doc as the most likely desired choice

hi #FediFriends 👋 does anyone have any #Keychron keebs or Keychron #switches in their #keebs? I’m trying to find an optimal setup for a friend’s first #MechKeeb based on her preferences from trying a couple of mine & keen to know about anyone’s experience with Keychron Banana or Silent Yellow switches (as well as any other quiet #tactile switches if you have recs for different brands) 🙏 #MechanicalKeyboards

@ricci thx for the rec 💕 the board I’m looking at for my friend has 3-pin mounts so I’m looking for switches I won’t have to help them mod but these look interesting

@ricci how difficult was / how long did it take you to set up in the first place? it’s vaguely on my radar but still in the “this seems interesting but is probably way more effort than I’m interested in investing at this point in my life” basket… 🤔

@ricci I feel like a series of really elaborate trophies bestowed upon him by very prestigious institutions but all with award titles like “HAD A BIG NAP IN THE OVAL OFFICE” seems appropriate

@futurebird from your description I thought “Liminality” might be fitting, although a quick search shows me that its already in use in anthropology so… ¯_(ツ)_/¯ 🤔

@futurebird assigning code broken in specific ways & having a rubric for teaching the troubleshooting sounds like it should be SOP for coding courses, is this not normally part of the curriculum? 🤔 (def not dumping on you, asking as an Old who is a self-taught potato coder who never did a CS degree & feels like the way I learned basically anything that I do know was: type it in from a magazine or other source / modify working code that’s similar to what I need -> make mistakes in transcription / tweaks -> code doesn’t run or runs with errors -> troubleshoot the mistakes -> learn stuff 🙃)

@futurebird maybe you could start by introducing the concept of character sets (ASCII probably being the most “obvious” one to start with) so that the students get familiar /comfortable with the idea that even “simple” things like numbers & letters are encoded in computer-land, which could then flow into a discussion of both bases & variables 🤔 ^ I’d suggest also the Unicode emoticons / emoji block for the fun factor but then you’re into multi-byte encodings & modifiers which seems you’d probably be throwing students into the deep end waaay too soon

@futurebird they live in a Bizarro World of their own imagination, so it wouldn’t surprise me to see them do exactly this. these are the same people who look at Orwell’s 1984 as an instruction manual rather than a cautionary tale (those who read books, like the Project 2025 authors), while accusing their enemies (basically anyone to the left of Mussolini) of using the Orwellian tactics that they so blatantly employ themselves
