@strypey You also get better ads. After decades of trying, automated online ads still aren’t noticeably better targeted to my interests than broadcast TV ads. Neither are as relevant as the ads in a specialist magazine or podcast.

@thisissethsblog Conspicuous non-consumption isn’t available to everyone. You need to be sufficiently privileged that your status will still be recognised even if you reject the outward symbols. If you’re someone who’s normally stereotyped as low status it can be very important to demonstrate that you’re wealthy, or speak and behave like you have high status.

@lowqualityfacts To be fair, they didn’t know it was going to be that big when they started building it. It just got away on them a bit.

@lowqualityfacts Maybe he’s the only one who sees that walls have two sides. Maybe it will really be us who are in prison while he and his toadies are the ones who are truly free in their tiny and unpleasant outer world.

@lowqualityfacts They later changed it to ‘Nihon’, which combines the two kanji characters for ‘Technically Gojira is not a dinosaur’ and ‘We do acknowledge the irony.’

@lowqualityfacts Similarly, a lot of English people bathe in Worcestershire. Although strangely, very few bathe in the Houses of Parliament, even though that is where the famous HP sauce is manufactured.

The worst thing that ever happened in software engineering was when Kirk asked Scotty how long something would take and Scotty said thirty minutes and Kirk said you’ve got five and Scotty got it done in five and impressionable children watched this and grew up to become managers.

@jilleduffy When I got a vasectomy, nobody asked me whether I was sure. The general attitude was ‘good on you’.Not a perfect comparison, of course. But for what it’s worth.

@DrCuriosity @lightweight @strypey I started replying to this, but I think it’s more of a blog post than a reply, and I’d need to set up a blog.TL;Can’t-Read;Not-Actually-Published… I think it’s legit to set someone up quickly on a server so they can see whether Mastodon is for them first. The UI challenge should be to help people find the right server and switch painlessly _after_ they’ve decided to stay.

@DrCuriosity @lightweight @strypey To that end, I think the problem isn’t starting people on mastodon.social, it’s keeping them there. It should be clearly indicated that it’s a starting server, not where you stay forever.

What do people like these days for basic basic blog software? I want to manage content, HTML, and CSS and host it somewhere cheap with minimal maintenance. Leaning towards static for simplicity.#AskFedi

@hosford42 @Piousunyn @StillIRise1963 People could get a lot better at recognising fascism if they understood it as the political application of bullying. We get so distracted trying to define it in terms of policies or symbols, when at its core it’s just adults doing the same things that playground bullies do.

@TomMarcinko Yeah, the both-sides fallacy means that even well-intentioned media constantly try to present fascism as a set of political beliefs, like socialism or conservatism or liberalism. That’s a category error. Fascism is a set of tactics for asserting power, not a coherent political position. @hosford42 @Piousunyn @StillIRise1963

@jacobrogers256 This is a reasonable definition (and I think there are others), but framing a definition like this in terms of historical European political traditions doesn’t help the average privileged person recognise a present-day fascist when they see one. It quickly gets bogged down into Mussolini-was-a-socialist and Hitler-allied-with-Stalin. It’s too much to pick apart. 1/n @TomMarcinko @hosford42 @Piousunyn @StillIRise1963

@TomMarcinko In the 1940s, the philosopher Karl Popper set out to write a definitive critique of fascism. But there was nothing philosophically interesting to say about fascism. He ended up with a volume about what Plato and Aristotle got wrong, and another about Hegel and Marx. But fascism… there was nothing there. It’s not a philosophy.@hosford42 @Piousunyn @StillIRise1963
