@kensanata > It is a petty form of rebellion for sure, in that it affects almost nothing in the 'real world'. I believe that it does affect one's soul, though, and that might ultimately be the most important effect that there can be.I think the author is really onto something here. There's an intangible something, a certain kind of magic, purity in such experiences that I'm convinced affects us on a very deep level.

Selfhosters:How do you handle offsite-backups?I have a physical machine in my office, hosting #nextcloud backed by a #btrfs raid1 with regular snapshots. So I believe to be somewhat prepared for the following scenarios:- disk fails => restore from raid- something important accidentally gets deleted => restore from snapshotWhat I'm not prepared for is something like this:- office goes up in flames[1/3]

So in addition to the precautions above, I'd like to include offsite backups to the list. They don't have to be fancy (versioned, incremental, etc.) but I do want them to be...- private => encrypted or on hardware that I can trust (like at a family member's house or sth)- robust enough to handle large quantities of data (up to about 5 TB)[2/3]

I'm imagining something along the lines of encrypting a btrfs snapshot and streaming it to a remote server. But I've never done something like this before. Is that a terrible idea? Do you have suggestions? Maybe an entirely different approach? Also, what kind of hosting can you recommend? Should I find a VPS with a big HDD? Object Storage?[3/3]#selfhosting #askfedi

@funnylookinhat Until recently I would have been convinced that 16 GB is more than enough...In my current project, the stack is immense though. It requires about 12 docker containers (Kafka, Elasticsearch, a graph db, etc.) for the dev environment and - get this - everything AGAIN for the test environment. So yeah, 16 GB is not enough here.... not to mention the required Electron (Microsoft Teams - sigh) apps I am forced to use.The upside is that it kinda legitimizes my 64 gig machine.

I'm confused about how the AI integration here is "ethical". Could you elaborate?

@matrix I was hoping this transition would be smoother. IIRC it was announced that all official @element clients are compatible with the change (can't find a source right now) so I thought we were good to go.That statement is technically correct, but since the compatible versions are not available on @fdroidorg yet, a chunk of the user base is left with a partially broken client for now.Poor support for F-Droid users has come up several times before. It doesn't feel like it's getting better.

@georgia Gotta admit, I had the same initial reaction. Saw some screenshots of Hollow Knight and thought it looked uninspired, generic and bland. No idea what made me buy it eventually but it's now one of my favourite games of all time.Just two more hours until Silksong...

Another nugget by @ploum:> If you are tempted to use an LLM to generate a text, don’t publish the output of the LLM. Publish the prompt! That’s where your information is. It is what people want to hear.https://ploum.net/2025-11-26-snake-oil-writing.html#AI #LLM #writing
