Yes, Trump rightly got the piss taken out of him at the UN General Assembly for spouting nonsense. But let's not forget that the "world leaders" laughing at him are also mostly millionaires who've got their money through having power over states and populations, and perpetuate that power through being millionaires. When it comes down to it, these powerful people are all the same. Screw them all, Trump and the gigglers.

I think most of us just want to go about our day-to-day lives, and all we really want from our political "leaders" is for them to maintain a country where we can do that in relative security and peace, respond to economic challenges and so on.It's amazing what a poor job many countries' leaders do of the basic responsibility of making sure the population have an education, a place to live and enough to eat to go about their daily business.Stop dreaming up Big Ideas and fix your shit.

According to something I read last night, four countries re-activated shortwave radio broadcasts in the past six months. We're constantly told it's in decline, that the internet is the way forward for international broadcasting, but perhaps increased levels of world tension have concentrated a few minds.Websites can be blocked, local radio relays in foreign capitals can be turned off (eg the BBC in Hong Kong recently) but shortwave crosses borders.

@vfrmedia Indonesia, Nepal, PNG and Peru. The Peruvian, Indonesian and PNG stations are in the tropical bands and designed for an audience in the immediate region, while Nepal is resuming its full international service.

@ieure Where are you based? RNZ is a really tough catch here in the UK simply because it's just so far away. You need good equipment to pull in the signal and even then it's not really listenable as a programme, sadly. The main thing on shortwave is CRI on seemingly every channel. In the gaps between CRI, quite interesting stuff makes it up from African countries.

News reaches me today of a radio station broadcasting to Iran's LGBT community.Radio Ranginkaman [Persian for Rainbow] is using an AM transmitter in Armenia (1395 kHz) to beam its programmes into Iran, because this programming is obviously banned there.http://radioranginkaman.org/🇮🇷 🏳️‍🌈

People who say short-wave or AM radio is dead are lucky enough to live in places with open internet connections and relatively free media markets. In an awful lot of the world, it's the only way to get non-government viewpoints to people.

From the US, a story about a broadcasting company who, when hit with Hurricane Michael, decided that the best course of action was to walk away from their damaged stations in Panama City and leave all staff out of work.Staff are continuing to update the stations' social media pages with critical safety-of-life information but have no jobs to return to themselves. Disgraceful behaviour from the radio company concerned.https://www.fybush.com/nerw-20181015/

The Czech Republic has a country music radio station whose output appears to consist mainly of Czech-language cover versions of familiar US country songs.I had no idea that a) country music was quite so popular in Central Europe; or b) there were enough Czech-language country covers to fill a radio station.http://www.countryradio.cz/
