If I was a malicious actor and I saw how vehemently people defended the usage of random scripts that claim to debloat Windows, MAN!Some of them deactivate Windows Defender... UAC... It would be so easy as a malicious actor to get in on this recent trend...

@dushman yeah but windows has bloat so I went onto Google dot com and I searched windows debloater and I installed the first script and now my computer says I'm part of a botnet now! Man I love being part of a community!

@dushman I don't recommend running debloat scripts cause 90% of what people say about windows bloat know nothing about how services work

@dushman also this wasn't an invitation for you to give me your software recommendations.

@dushman Unsolicited software advice is actually one of my biggest pet peeves. Please delete it.Why would you even think that a post being critical about Windows Debloat Scripts would solicit "Hey, this script is good tho I promise!" It's like selling snake oil to someone trying to raise awareness of the pseudoscience behind snake oil.

@dushman Also if I was a malicious actor I too would've put the source code in public, but would implement malicious attributes in the provided binaries.A project being open source means nothing in terms of the intent of the individual behind the project, it just means you have to be more clever with your implementation of the malicious aspects of the project.

@dushman telemetry sucks but you don't really know how "useless" stuff is until you have something that relies on it as a dependency hangs your entire system. It doesn't really reduce idle resources, cause if you have a computer that was made with competent components in the last 10 years you should be more than fine.

@dushman I'd say Debloating windows is a rather sketchy business but it's a fool's errand anyways.

@dushman it's literally on the same level of snake oil that "download more ram" comes from, but instead of the idea that it's a failure on the user's fault for not having enough system resources, it's instead a failure of the software provider's fault.I fail to see how they are any different except one is seen as a joke while the other is seen as a way to squeeze more performance (which the comparisons are almost always in the error of margin) out of your system.

@dushman they don't run unless you launch them, I don't know how you can think that they impact idle resource usage unless you're equivocating two things that have no correlation

@dushman don't touch shit and don't run shit you don't know. As a security minded individual, Debloating Windows is one of the dumbest fucking things you can do.If you care so much about bloat, genuinely Linux is the better option for you. I care very little about "bloat" and I even make fun of people who claim any sort of user enhancement they dislike as bloat yet I still use Linux on a daily basis. And I enjoy my experience on Linux cause I don't give a shit about bloat.

I feel like I've been using fedi a whole less often nowadays, a sentiment that I feel has been reflected with my friends as well. While I've been using Fedi for 3 years now, and have gathered a not insubstantial following, the general community in the past few months is something that has been rather grating on me. I vehemently despise open source rhetoric, and general mindsets that encompass the open source community.I hoped, rather fruitlessly, that Fedi could be something other than "The Open Source Community's Solution To Twitter".I wish Fedi could be more, could be better, however the people who surround it are the same knuckleheads who give other Open Source services a bad reputation for being extremely gatekeepy, reclusive, and rather supremacist in their software choices and decisions.I know that hypocritically speaking, being less active as an individual on this platform has only caused this problem to exacerbate, but it really does kinda feel like with the rest of my friends moving back to Twitter, there isn't really a big reason to stay here except to get frustrated at FOSSoids who give unsolicited software recommendations while also treating you like you're an inferior bastard for liking Arch instead of Gentoo. Its not a failure of mastodon, nor is it a failure of the fediverse as a concept, its just a failure of who it appeals to most and how they market themselves.

This is me acknowledging my recent decline in activity, and the possible reasons as to why it may be.Techier posts do rather good on this platform, a lot better than they do on Twitter, so don't take this as me saying I'll cease posting and interacting with the community. But as a rule of thumb, if you want to see me post in an environment that I feel is less hostile, please follow me on Twitterhttps://twitter.com/solarness6
