Finished The Excavation of Hob's Barrow https://store.steampowered.com/app/1182310/The_Excavation_of_Hobs_Barrow/ -- it was good! It's a well produced adventure game which feels like an old-school 90's game, with full voice-over.It's not _retro_, apart from being pixel art; it's just that it puts story first over player agency.It was about 6 hours of play time for me and I only had to look one thing up - I think it's pretty fair by adventure game standards. HF radio propagation is so cool and weird. Here's me calling CQ on FT8 on 20m last night with <1W through a modified Pixie.Only people 650-700mi away heard me, in basically a radius around my house!(Also one dude that lives in my neighbourhood).#hamradio

also my friend and I tried to build basically the worst/simplest direct-conversion radio possible -- on a breadboard -- using one S8050 transistor for a mixer, fed from the antenna into the collector, LO into the base, mixed output at emitter into a soundcard.And it works. I am stunned. The last 12 hours of https://pskreporter.info/pskmap?callsign=ve3xeu for me include dozens of reports including one in Romania.

This is said modified Pixie - modified to take an external local oscillator (the alligator clips) over a 47k resistor between ground and base of the first transistor (a 9018?).I also removed the Pi network from the output as it is tuned for 40m and I have an external Pi network for tuning set up for my antenna.Other mods I tried included just removing the LM386 and taking audio out directly from the socket header which had much lower noise.

Not pictured, and arguably a giant cheat, is the SI5351 I am using as a local oscillator. It makes so many HF things easy, I'm sure that hams in the 80's and 90's would have killed for such a versatile and useful $15 VFO-in-a-box solution.

After (voluntarily) leaving work 9 months ago, LinkedIn and recruitment dried up (which is fine, I wasn't looking). Now that I have a full-time job again I'm getting regular recruitment emails.It really seems like tech-company recruiters are only actively recruiting people who are currently employed which is gross but also seems short-sighted and stupid.What a depressing industry.

@jcs A System 36! When I was a teenager working a summer job we decommissioned one of these from a company that was moving offices.Originally it was moved in by crane in crates; it came out in much smaller pieces.My boss took the HDD home and hung it on his wall. It predictably tore out a chunk of plasterboard, so he re-enforced the wall and did it again. Commitment to the bit.

Ten years ago today I was nostalgic and lonely on the Internet and I joined @tildetown and it changed my life substantially for the better. I’m not as part of things there as I once was, but I’ve made an effort this year. I love the place and the people who make it great. We can, actually, have nice things on the Internet still.

The parts are coming in for the dedicated server that will be the future home of @tildetown — the low profile 1x PCIe network card looks like a NIC for a dollshouse next to dual 10GbE ones I’ve used lately.(Also 1TiB of NVMe in our future)

I love the little cutter marks you can see on an unfinished CNC’d piece. I made this dice-holder … holder out of some scrap furniture rescued from the bin.Added dog bones (is that the technical name?) for internal corner clearances. Pretty happy with the results, I’m rusty at this stuff.
