Hey @ChrisWere looks like you have been navigating fedi much longer / better than me, how are you thinking about your multiple accounts because I just rampage followed all three? of yours... interested to hear your opinions on why you didnt use the same account to share videos / mastadon / PixelFed? If I were to start posting my youtube vids would you still do it that way or try to have one account across fedi services?

@ChrisWere duckduckgo email protection also a lovely middle ground where you might need to recieve emails longer term but if it gets spammy you can just block the duck address entirely!

@ChrisWere my dad, who was a very sensible person starting using twitter “to fight russian propoganda” at the start of invasion of ukraine. Now he is voting reform, thinks muslims and rufugees are taking over the UK. He said him and his buddies “the fellas” tried mastodon, “but couldn’t see the point of it” I would like to research how this radicalisation happens as its wild to have seen it first hand. He will not listen / accept any facts now unless they fit his narrative

I have found that all of the "solutions" I've looked at are just locking you into some more specific ecosystem, so went back to the revolutionary idea of using the #filesystem I have my photos and videos in a folder structure on my laptop by year, trip.I don't auto backup from my #iPhone or #Sonya6700 anymore, that really just synced a load of cruft I had to delete, or pay to store. I move photos I want to my laptop, where I adjust and edit them in #darktable / #rawtherapee / #digikam 🧵 2/4

Next I run #syncthing on my laptop, and on my #homelab #intelN100 #n100 mini pc / server that runs in the cupboard and is very #lowpower I run #proxmox and this also has a #samba share which allows any other network devices to see the media.With syncthing running, I always have two copies of the media, but for backup I was using #rclone to send an encrypted copy to #googledrive - which I am in the process of switching over to #nextcloud running on #hetzner🧵 3/4

Lastly, I have #immich in a #proxmox VM as a readonly viewer of the samba share so I can see photos on my phone and other devices. My devices connect to #wireguard when out of the house so they can still access the server to sync!Hope that is helpful to someone, and let me know what I'm doing wrong and can improve!🧵 4/4

@jimsalter yes I totally agree that #ai is bullshit, but the fact is that the #broligarchy are constantly adding to, aggregating, and selling your information for #surveillancecapitalism also in relation to your specific example photo - if you have more context in the pic, and in aggregate your whole life of photos in google photos, its not a great situation IMO.

#selfhosting is so incredibly easy, I really don't know what all the complaints are about. Literally all you need is a degree in digital forensics, unlimited free time, a home office, dedicated high speed internet links, redundant power supplies & a can do attitude!
