#Apple finally copied #Firefox’s Multi-Account Containers extension with the newly announced Safari Profiles. I don’t think any browser on iOS comes close to this kind of compartmentalization so far.#WWDC #privacy

If you're using #bitwarden, make sure to change the KDF algorithm to Argon2id[^1] which is much more robust against GPU-powered attacks compared to its counterpart. You can play around with this little calculator to see the impact of each algorithm on cracking cost estimation: https://passwordbits.com/passphrase-cracking-calculator/[^1]: https://bitwarden.com/help/what-encryption-is-used/#argon2id#security #infosec #password

And if you're still using #lastpass, this is your opportunity to do yourself a big favor and switch to #bitwarden.

#Element is finally getting a speed improvement. The “secret sauce” to achieve this performance boost boils down to having the client only fetch data relevant to the current UI, and progressively request additional data as the user moves around the app.“The app directly drives sliding sync to fetch precisely the right data needed to render its UI as rapidly as possible.”https://element.io/blog/element-x-experience-the-future-of-element/#matrix #privacy #messaging

Honestly, I’m kind of surprised this wasn’t the case since day one. It’s a pretty common practice in web dev to only fetch necessary data to achieve low Time To Interactive.Anyway, it probably wasn’t as straightforward as one might think and I’m glad they finally figured it out.

@pfm I personally find it extremely difficult to even start the conversation if whatever more private alternative I’m preaching isn’t at least on par in terms of features and ease of use with the service/application it’s meant to replace. For example, I’ve had a much greater success getting people to install #uBlockOrigin on their favourite browser than getting them to ditch Google Maps in favor of OsmAnd.

#Firefox just announced a new #privacy feature: Encrypted Client Hello (ECH). In short, it encrypts the very first message the browser sends out to initiate an encrypted communication tunnel (TLS channel) with a website."ECH uses a public key fetched over the Domain Name System (DNS) to encrypt the first message between a browser and a website, protecting the name of the visited website from prying eyes and dramatically improving user privacy."https://blog.mozilla.org/en/products/firefox/encrypted-hello/

@stfn Do you have a cost estimate for the VPS?Also, have you looked at Easy Wireguard? It’s a UI to streamline the wireguard config.

@ChrisWere I can’t say I do. I sometimes lurk through a lemmy.ml account. But you’re right, you don’t need a lemmy account to access lemmy instances - it’s all part of the fediverse.

A family member’s Surface laptop went dark the other day. It seems to be Windows-related. I offered to “fix” it for them by installing Ubuntu. I’m thinking of going with Gnome since Unity is too different from the Windows UI, so they’re not completely disoriented. Or should I go with KDE?If you’ve introduced a Windows user to Linux before, please share your tips!#askFedi #askMastodon #Linux

@simplenomad I’m pretty sure Signal would leave the EU if that becomes law :/
