I don't know who needs to hear this right now, with the spring rain and the blossoms on the trees and the animals being all excitable and the general Spring Energy going on, but there's a plugin for Calibre called FanFicFare that downloads stories from a variety of websites (including that one) and makes them vintage-ereader-friendly(full list of supported sites at https://github.com/JimmXinu/FanFicFare/wiki/SupportedSites)

Updating story bits on Improbable Island, which is a game I've run for seventeen years now and of course I keep coming across jokes that I wouldn't make today, and jokes that were satire 17 years ago and are now rendered redundant by reality being daftAlso bonus-material "This is a thing that will definitely be sorted out 17 years from now" optimistic-sci-fi content

Reminded of bitter old stand-up comedians who end up digging their heels in partially because of ideology but also because updating material and coming up with new material is legitimately harder than repeating the same tired old jokes

Except they don't live on a website and have the ability to go back and update shit every few years, whereas I do and, like, if you have the ability to update and rewrite so as to move with the times, then you kinda have to y'know

(I'm not even necessarily talking about social justice issues here, I'm talking for example there was this cute little bit in the museum where there was an exhibit on googles, which by then wasn't even a search engine anymore but a wee thingy that sat on your ear and projected into your retina and you could say "Google where are my keys" and it'd put arrows over your vision and direct you to walk towards the last place it saw your keys, which ended up being in your hand, in the reflection from a mirror. I wrote that when google were good)

(obviously that's gotta come out because google's gone to shit, and I'm struck by how easy it is to instinctively want to say "Ugh I knew they were dodgy from the start" but no, seriously, google genuinely used to be actually good, I used to like them, I've got the proof right here, and a ghost of me in my thirties is still on the internet telling people they're good and That Is A Problem)

Ooh is this why blogs took over from websitesBy website I mean you have a welcome page and then categories of cool stuff and subcategories and pages within those subcategories that people could traverse in whichever order they were interested in, as opposed to people looking at your stuff newest-firstIf people look at newest-first then they're always seeing the latest you, the you that is the most you, rather than seeing stuff that they're interested in but which you wrote years and years and years ago and you might not even agree with anymore or might just want a fresh coat of paint or whatever. People don't expect that anymore, search results are full of "Best way to construct a picnic table in 2025," people are no longer used to websites laid out like the folder full of random notes on your hard drive with information neatly categorized without anything to do with each page's ageAnd here's a nasty little wrinkle from this Recency-Brain, people will read shit you wrote fifteen years ago and unless you put the date on the page (and nobody reads the date anyway) then there's no way for them to the difference between "Shit that I wrote fifteen years ago and I'm still proud of and stand by," and "Shit that I wrote fifteen years ago and then just straight-up forgot about because it's in some dusty corner that I don't look at very often." Those two things look absolutely identical.

I should write more comedy than satire, because if you write satire on a website (that isn't a blog where the old stuff just gets naturally hidden by time) then you have to periodically update your satire so that it remains satire

Another hard thing about writing website stuff that isn't blog stuff (and I count fiction stuff as blog stuff because people have a general sense of when a book is published whereas people look at any website and tend to assume it contains up-to-the-minute information) is the little red flags that aren't little red flags when you write the character.Like, I have a very wholesome dude running a museum and he's got a section on military history and now, in 2025, I'm going "Hmm" about that, the same way you would if you were to offhandedly remark ten years ago that one of your characters was interested in vikings or the fall of the roman empire

π¦ Right, I'm just gonna write a whole new character, give him a funny hat, he'll have a catchphrase like "Can't catch a horse with a pair of socks!" and nothing will go wrong(ten years later some far-right politician somehow uses "Can't catch a horse with a pair of socks!" as a campaign slogan and now everybody understands that this is a metaphor for something absolutely horrific)π¦ *didn't read the news that day*π¦ *notices five years later* SHIT SHIT SHIT

I'm very glad that my players these days trend towards the "Yeah let's move with the times" end of the spectrum because at some point we're going to have to have a difficult conversation about a character who we've had in from the very start and is a beloved mascot of the game who also, to be perfectly frank, is a naked old man who you ride around like a horse

(one reason my players trend that way is because I periodically remove or rewrite badly-aged content and that pisses some of them off enough to straight-up quit the game lol)
