I wonder if anyone has designed a "systems" programming language that doesn't have destructors, but makes it a compile error for a variable to fall out of scope without being stored or explicitly destroyed. When people like Linux kernel maintainers complain about the "implicit control flow" of destructors, that could be a perfect alternative.I need to try the experimental `LinearTypes` feature of Haskell. It would be nice to see Rust offer a feature like that. (Rust has "affine" rather than "linear" types.)

@futurebird My *theoretical* answer to this that I've thought of but not done anything to achieve: the Gameboy Advance link port has a UART mode. Assuming it supports a compatible baud rate / etc., it should be possible to connect to a serial modem with an RS-232 voltage converter. The ARM7TDMI should be capable running some kind of network stack. Trying to type on one would be miserable, but showing messages on the screen should be doable.

@theresnotime We should try to convince the right wing pundits that NAT is communism.

@mothcompute A device should come with a paper manual, with a section indicating the DIP switch positions for "run only legitimate software" , "run legitimate software and malware", and "run only malware" modes.

@foone Come to think of it, it's kind of odd that there doesn't seem to already be a standard for HID over IP. Given that's already an established standard over USB, Bluetooth, i2c, and SPI.

The rules for Dungeons and Dragons (and board games like Monopoly, for that matter), should really be formatted more like the Vulkan spec. You MUST follow RFC 2119 if you want people to actually follow the rules. Otherwise, is it a surprise that everyone does it wrong?

@aral @palestine If the Gaza strip is a "prison", who does Schmidt think is preventing people from leaving that prison?

@cody Programmers:"Whoever wrote this section of the code shouldn't be allowed to use a computer for the protection of society."[Runs git blame.]"Actually, the author [me] clearly was acting sensibly given the information they had and the time available."

@futurebird Presumably marriage rate and the age at which people get married also has something to do with housing costs. Even if you're dating, you are probably less likely to get married if you can't afford to move out of your parents house, or out of an apartment shared with several roommates.

If we call all Norse people from the Viking Age "Vikings", it's only fair to also call all British people from the Age of Sail "Pirates"."William Shakespeare was inarguably the most famous Pirate playwright.""Most Pirates at the time were at least nominally loyal to Pirate Queen Elizabeth.""Under James, the noted witch-hunting enthusiast, the Pirate homeland had finally been united under a single king.""Most Pirates practiced a religion called 'Anglicism' that differed from that of pre-piratical Britain. But in the far north some adhered to the cult of 'Presbyterianism' and yet others clung to the ancient Catholicism of their heathen forebearers.""The Pirates once again captured Napoleon Bonaparte, and left him stranded on the remote island of Saint Helena.""I am descended from Scottish Pirates. Which sounds a lot cooler than saying my ancestors were probably farmers from Fife and sheep thieves from the borders."

You could write a book on that period of ~~British~~ Pirate history that's entirely accurate, but worded this way.The introduction can explain that scholars consider the application of the term "Pirate" for all people from Great Britain to be inaccurate. Most people would have called themselves British, or perhaps a more local term like English, Scottish, Welsh, or Cornish. But the author chooses to use the common term throughout the book regardless of this technicality.A history book from a parallel universe that's exactly the same expect for how the word "Pirate" is used. (And how this colors the discussion and understanding of British history.)
