How will leaders in the Middle East react to Rishi Sunak's appointment of a man famous for putting his genitals in a pigs head as foreign secretary? Seems culturally insensitive at a very sensitive time.

@dneary @Br3nda @evan I think it's mostly racism.Since I've become a citizen I've become more frustrated because first-past-the-post feels like trolling rather than actual democracy if you've grown up in a modern democracy.

@ahl the change is largely that we now run software that we can't trust so we use the paradigms intended to separate untrustworthy humans to separate untrustworthy software (and the untrustworthy companies that provide it).

@jamie how high were you when your friend played guitar, and when you sometimes think about it?Also, your friend was wrong. Musical note are frequencies so maybe there are infinitely many of them but they only exist after a full cycle. If he was bending the high E at the 12th fret that's around 660Hz - so that's playing only maybe 700 distinct notes per second. But it feels fucking great.

If Microsoft manages to hire the whole OpenAI team paying them only the same as they're getting now - without a big-company premium - that's a crazy good deal. I hope the OpenAI folks know they shouldn't fall for that.

Oh Rust...I started writing a `vi` implementation in Rust. It has basic cursor navigation, can insert text, load files and has a text UI. It's useless (but has been fun to write so far). A release build is 7.3M. For comparison, vim is 4.1M and is actually useful.

Three years on, 30% of Americans (≈100M) (wrongly) believe that the 2020 election was stolen, yet only a couple of thousand people tried to prevent the (in their minds antidemocratic) transfer of power. The rest of them (wrongly) believe that American democracy was being destroyed but they wouldn't do anything to defend it.Three years on I still can't work out who I have more contempt for. Who do you think are worse Americans?

Talking about "genuine aid workers" has big "legitimate rape" energy. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-04-03/world-central-kitchen-blast-australian-dead-netanyahu-reacts/103660170

Falling asleep and then farting is the most relatable thing Trump has ever done. Brilliant trial strategy.

When your team has negative headcount the term "mythical man month" is a good unit to measure work that isn't going to get done.

One of the worst things about overhearing about American college sportsball is when for long moments I'm confused why a Canadian university in the Yukon Territory would be playing.

I don't see how Donald Trump can get a fair trial in New York City. All of the jurors are likely to be Americans. How can they be expected to treat someone who tried to violently overthrow their republic in a balanced way? The trial should probably be moved to somewhere less attached to the ongoing existence of a free and democratic United States.
