I'm trying to follow the threads of some subculture-specific libertarianism-ish stuff, and I just keep thinking, "okay, so... you're an anarchist then? bc the state has no valid source of authority and anything the state does, including providing free education, is morally invalid and incompatible with freedom, so... anarchist. right? no?"

@maladyThe ones who are in favor of some amount of government are the ones that confuse me. Does the state have valid authority or doesn't it? They spend enough time talking around it that it ends up looking like they just don't want to actually come out and *say* that they want to get rid of the government entirely.

@maladyThis particular brand of it is more bullshit than most, even, as it's based on a lot of obscure religious texts rather than directly on an analytical foundation. I'm just trying to pick apart its underlying premises and having... a hard time, lol.

@azureI think Tyler Cowen and I could get along much better than most libertarians in my acquaintance, my younger self included. In this specific case, the appeal to natural law is replaced with a religious appeal. The religious texts in question place extremely high importance on liberty (defined at one point as freedom of choice, thought, and action within bounds of the law), so I understand the connection to more mainstream libertarianism there. There's also a strong cultural mistrust of the US government, so that also makes sense. But--my knowledge of libertarianism beyond those bounds is sketchy. I think one thing I'm grappling with is that I'm not sure how the starting point of "individual liberty is important" ends up at "property rights are paramount".At risk of being overly specific, this is part of a larger research project on the topic of how this culture is both very pro-communism--within very specific bounds--and *also* very anti-communism; I'm studying some of its extremist fringes for this, and they're invariably on a libertarian-to-ancap spectrum, but I'm having trouble teasing out the ideas (even unconscious) that underlie that.@malady

@kaniini your thoughts on http://bobaboard.com/faqs ? not much available info as yet, but as an anonymity-first, decentralized social network idea it looks interesting, and you're the decentralized anonymity expert.

remember when we all thought that if you designed your social network just right, you could manipulate people's psychology so that they would be nice to each other?

If your response to "covid-19 has a 6-7% global death rate, that is ludicrous" is "yeah but only 0.2% among young people" like... think about what you're saying.

Panic is never a great response, but look, some fear has to happen here or people will never take the basic precautions against spreading the disease that need to happen on a large enough scale to actually slow it down. There are legitimately millions of lives at stake here, if you have to scare people into washing their hands then you scare them.

I’m not saying I want this to happen, but I just keep thinking about what it would do to us as a society, long-term, if a big chunk of a very specific slice of our population ended up dying due to this virus.Because as everybody has noticed, it does target a very specific demographic: the elderly, and the conservatives (in the US, probably thanks to Trump; far fewer republicans are following social distancing guidelines than democrats). The culture of Europe was enormously affected in the 20s, in a whole range of ways, due to suddenly missing most of an entire generation of young men due to WWI and the Spanish Influenza—historians can go on and on about it. What are historians gonna say about us?

@Azure I know, and I'm not sure I can articulate why it surprises me so much. Maybe because "moderate" is Romney all over (for a republican anyway), while I've only ever heard of this idea from economists (eggheads, no political power) and radical types like Andrew Yang.
