To all my friends familiar with the PCI specification, a question if you please.PCI devices with VEN=FFFF&DEV=FFFF are "hidden" from the OS and so the 0xFFFF value is invalid to get for devices. But what about subsystem ID? Is a device with PCI subsystem_id (VEN or DEV) of 0xFFFF valid? If so, what is it trying to *say*? Thanks!

I've talked to quite a few vendors over the years about concerns in open sourcing their existing closed source update code to make it possible to build a fwupd plugin. Rather than repeat myself over and over, I've written just over a page of justification on why it's not really an issue. Does anyone have any comments or other suggestions? Thankshttps://docs.google.com/document/d/14kbVcT3wEgK2t3knEqzy0zuoU13DEeKLy9RjCoIh0K4/edit?usp=sharing

New #fwupd release, get it here: https://github.com/fwupd/fwupd/releases/tag/1.9.8There's an important crash fix which can happen when hotplugging a dock (hence why it's been two weeks since the last release, rather than four) so please upgrade from 1.9.7.Enjoy!

Opinions welcome: I've done 3 releases of fwupd in the last month. On the plus side bugfixes go out to users quickly, and new hardware gets supported faster. On the negative side it increases the amount of work distro packagers are doing and also means there's less of a *splash* of new stuff with each point release.Comments?

Happy Birthday to the LVFS9 years ago today I wrote 4 little PHP scripts and pushed it to OpenShift which was the beginning of the LVFS. We've since rewritten it in Python, switched the deployment from "sudo git pull" on the server under my stairs at home (literally) to deploying onto AWS with Terraform. In 9 years we've onboarded over 140 vendors, shipped ~110 million firmware files and added support for ~85 firmware update protocols for ~1600 different devices. I'm pretty happy with that.

I've just tagged the 2.0.0 release of #fwupd: https://github.com/fwupd/fwupd/releases/tag/2.0.0There are a lot of big changes, and we've been working on them for quite a long time. If you're interested in what we've done, I've written a longer blog here: https://blogs.gnome.org/hughsie/2024/10/04/fwupd-2-0-0/ -- there's a ton of new hardware supported. Enjoy!

Some good news; yesterday the LVFS won the Security category at the #OpenUK awards, hosted at the House of Lords in London. As an open source maintainer 99% of my communication is receiving bug reports and feature requests from sometimes less-than-polite users.Events like yesterday remind me of two things: that people appreciate what I do, and that there's a whole family of people who understand why open is so very important.

@mntmn I want this to succeed so hard. From someone in the trenches of a closed hardware ecosystem this is exactly what the world needs. If anyone needs convincing, I've seen first-hand how the MNT team do the right thing and how much they care. I'm sure they'll hit the funding goal, but please boost and share to your networks to make sure they smash it.I'd purchase one myself, but I already have dozens (literally...) of laptops, and my wife would kill me if another turned up.

A few weeks ago I was invited to talk about firmware updates for servers using fwupd/LVFS at Prem'Day 2025. I gave the hardware vendors a really hard time, and got lots of instant feedback from customers in the the audience from the "little green thumbs" that people could raise. The main takeaway from the Prem’Day community seemed to be that proprietary tooling adds complexity without value, and using open ecosystems enable users to better operate their infrastructure.https://youtu.be/KVentIUwX8o?si=kyrMiJTMiHxepk7B

I'm also happy to announce we've got a new sponsor for the LVFS: #FrameworkAlthough there are about a half a dozen OEMs that have promised to sponsor LVFS, Framework is the first to have actually signed the paperwork. You can see the new logo on https://fwupd.org/ and also the new "sponsorship pill" on various vendor pages like https://fwupd.org/lvfs/vendors/#framework

I also wanted to say a huge thanks to Framework, not just for the sponsorship -- but also for the pressure they've put on their suppliers to support fwupd and the LVFS.I'm a big fan of reducing e-waste and repairing my electronics, and I'm glad to be a helping in a small way with that. Thanks again!
