I don't mean to be alarmist, but I keep seeing this misinformation everywhere, including from okay outlets like NPR: There are no exceptions to the full ban on all transition medical care in Missouri that will take effect on Thursday April 27. It doesn't matter if you've taken HRT for decades, have no sex organs anymore, or have additional medical reasons to take HRT. Your doctor will not be allowed to prescribe medication or surgery to treat gender dysphoria. There are requirements in the "emergency rule" that claim to allow you to continue HRT if you meet them. But there is no way to meet those requirements. How can you "resolve" autism, anxiety, depression, personality disorders? (Tried to do a more screen reader friendly formatting style here.)

@zleap Great question! We've all been hearing different things from our doctors, Planned Parenthood is committed to providing care, many other providers (like mine) are basically saying "We care about you, but don't know what these rules mean for you".

@thewritertype my favorite Freud joke: "Do you know what a Freudian slip is? It's when you say one thing, but mean your mother."

@AmishSuperModel Feel free to - most people seem to consider being trans "a mental health issue", so it's fine with me if you also consider wanting to be an ALIVE trans person a "mental health issue". I won't disarm until every single fascist transphobe does. It's basic safety. We can't trust the cops, courts, or our communities to defend us.

I need to hear this about 200 times a day. Being "normal" isn't very fun, and it's not as safe as it seems.

@rvawonk Could anyone tell me what the actual risk of this is? I wouldn't think it would affect people unless they're "secretly" Jewish (or "secretly" Chinese). Targeting people by genome doesn't seem to make a ton of sense, but releasing information to make Jewish and Chinese people feel terror does make sense. So refusing to be afraid seems like the best play based on the information I have.

(and I say this as someone who was quite surprised to find Guangzhou-area family on his DNA test, and my partner is Ashkenazi, so it's not a random hypothetical, it's a real question)

@Adam_Cadmon1 @ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs @sidereal The national appetite for anything beyond quick-acting reforms + long-term reforms aren't there, in my opinion. We want those reforms desperately, and we want them to be major, I believe, but there doesn't seem to be the slightest appetite for revolution or anything revolutionary. In my opinion, any attempts right now would just result in mass death and a full fascist takeover.

@sidereal @ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs @Adam_Cadmon1 What it would take for me to support an overthrow would be that we already have day-one, full plans to replace all the vital services provided by the US govt today. A revolution without that would be, IMO, relying on so many people dying that we don't need to provide support to the remainder. And "we'll figure it out later" sounds to me like "Just elevate me/us to power first! and then I'll ignore the need for services."I think that people get bogged down in "the US is not providing good support to every person" and ignore that there ARE millions who might literally die if there's a break in those support services for too long. I want to, but I cannot trust our current crop of Americans to turn around after a violent overthrow and care for their poor elderly neighbor who needs insulin. Y'know?

@freakazoid @sidereal @ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs @Adam_Cadmon1 I believe that if enough people want major reforms, and we work towards them, the changes will be indistinguishable from a revolution. Some culture is going to have to be the first to put aside the old ways, and America does a lot of new and innovative things (good and bad). I think the old ideas about what works and doesn't work need to all be thrown out and reevaluated, too. They are ideas from a world with under 8 billion people, and I don't think most of them apply anymore.

For people who have "explore art" as part of their New Year's resolution, I have unsolicited advice:#Art has no rules at all, beyond the important safety ones like "don't mix bleach and ammonia". It doesn't matter if people think your art is "bad" - it's not supposed to be "good", it's supposed to express something. One person's "can't draw anything recognizable" is another's "unique personal sketching style". Try to see your art in a museum, 200 years from now. Is it hauntingly weird and beautiful? Childish and therefore poignant? Reminiscent of prehistoric cave art? What does the placard say about you, the artist, based on what you created? Pursuing art is worthwhile for its own sake. Don't worry if you get caught stealing old inkpens out of the garbage, or lying sprawled on the ground to photograph a mushroom, or cutting holes in your brand-new shirt. "It's for an art project!" is a liberating thing to say.

@clive @grimalkina @researchbuzz The most valuable tool anyone could create for me is a site that tells me, maybe based on my age, which "basic facts" I learned have now been disproven.

@rchusid My partner's Jewish, and an "old family friend" told him that dating me (and being gay) was "continuing the work of Hitler". At his brother's wedding, no less.

@todayilearned The fact that PetSmart and Petco used to sell parrots, and still sells birds (especially conures) is horrendous. And when the bird rescues are full to bursting!

@goodreedAJ @Teri_Kanefield @va2lam @philip_cardella https://mastodon.social/@JuliusGoat/109486257121027249This thread helped clarify a lot of "paradox of tolerance" questions I had. I really VALUE people's heterodox and weird and iconoclast thoughts, and don't like the thought of suppressing anyone, so it was hard for me to draw a line. But the fact is that I just don't think what we're currently doing works, and considering tolerance as part of a social contract, rather than a blank check for bigotry, seems like it would work better."[W]hile you are debating, your opponent is merely *using* debate. The fact that you are engaging means they have already succeeded.Once you're willing to debate whether one group of people or another should be abused, then abusing and expelling people from society is something that is up for debate. It's on the table. It's listed on the exchange."
