some absolute fucking genius in rural northwestern vermont has used a chainsaw to carve a tree trunk into a giant hand with a raised middle finger, and has mounted it on a huge pole in their front yard for maximum visibility. please also note the working weathervane attached at right, bedecked with seven additional smaller middle fingers. so much home state pride right now 🖤

@louis i appreciate what you're going for here. i don't think it's for me, though? i personally prefer to live more in the present. mastodon feels like a conversation, and i feel about it the way i feel about most conversations — it's great while it's happening, i will store a tiny bit of it in my memory long-term, and most of it won't last in a long-term way, which is good because it keeps my brain free to be present in the next conversational moment. just one person's thoughts of course! 🖤

fascinating (and gorgeous!) chart showing the evolution of recorded-music revenue over the last 50 yearsthe first thing that jumps out at me is how much smaller the overall pie is post-streaming. the streaming services and major labels have successfully managed a) to dramatically devalue recorded music and b) to put a much larger percentage of it directly into their own pockets. it's one of the single biggest upward transfers of wealth in history — from artists to billionaire corporations
