@freemo I am happy that qoto has QT implemented but Mastodon implements it too we should definitely go with the Mastodon wide version. Ours only works properly in web interface and only for qoto users. It's not available in apps and if I understand it correctly people on other instances only see our QTs as links, is that right btw? adding a link is not at all the same as full QT. just posting a link is adding friction to the process. You may think that friction is minor but it is not. People don't click on links. They want visual info about the quoted toot, not a link.

@freemo established standard? so there are many instances that use it, not just us? if so then yes it would certainly be preferable if Mastodon adopts it instead of creating a new one.

came across this antivaxx garbage while searching the COVID hastag. that account is pumping harmful nonsense in quantity (garlic and honey are alternative to antibiotics etc). looked up the instance it's hosted on (brighteon.social) and it proudly proclaims that this sort of stuff is their mission. why exactly are we federated with them? @freemoQT: https://brighteon.social/@NaturalNews/109585760530486256

@freemo I do know I can block servers and I will block this one but I am not worried about myself. I see zero value and only harm in federating with them at server level. Engaging with any account like that is worse than futile.

@freemo disagree. STEM doesn't mean people are medical experts. I have lots of colleagues who think COVID is over and is now like flu. One recommended homeopathic medicine for my stomach problems. and as I said engaging with quacks is useless.

@freemo again, I disagree. bad medical info isn't just wrong, it's harmful. and that is grounds for blocking altogether IMO, not leaving it for individual people to judge. the latter is what lead to the spread of antivax propaganda on social media in the first place. I mean, would you allow an account like this to set up shop on qoto? I sure hope not.

@freemo please. there is a very large distinction between burning books and not helping someone spread dangerous medical quackery.

@freemo to elaborate then. I find your comparison ridiculous. and misleading. we are dealing with with a specific situation which can and should be addressed directly on merits. which is: how to deal with an instance dedicated to spreading misinformation, particularly medical one. the account I mentioned is hardly unique there. it’s ALL like that (antivaxx, Alex Jones, oil to fight cancer etc) as you can easily see by scrolling through a few posts on their local timeline. by federating with them we are helping spread those messages. leaving it up to individual users to block them is the wrong recipe. that attitude is what led to the spread of antivaxxer sentiment in the first place and we are now dealing with the results.

@freemo we are going in circles here. I disagree with everything you just said. helping spread dangerous medical misinformation is not science. it’s the opposite. it leads to tangible harm which is happening right now if you pay attention to the news.

@freemo when this situation actually arises let me know. until then how about we stick with the problem we are actually dealing with?

@freemo I am claiming that when someone wants to burn one of those books I’ll discuss it. Until then I want to discuss actual problems not fantasy ones.

@dmnelson this didn't create a bump in Mastodon sign ups though. which sadly suggests that by and large 3rd party app users (those who haven't left already) are sticking with twitter.

@paul @ivoryFeature request for #ivoryPlease change the way old tweets are loaded. the current system is driving me crazy. it seems to load about 200 tweets at a time starting from the oldest. This may be fine for power users who spend a lot of time in the app but it is not great for casual users. I mostly use Mastodon in the browser of my computer, not in the app. When I open Ivory after a few days absence I have to spend inordinate amount of time repeatedly pulling thousands of old messages till I get to recent ones. This is very annoying. Please make it possible to skip loading all old messages and load from most recent as opposed to the oldest ones. Metatext does this and it’s much more convenient.
